May 15, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (25-14), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, struck for nine runs in the third inning Wednesday and routed the Winston-Salem Dash 9-2 at BB&T Ballpark. The Birds have won eight of their last nine games and will play the Dash in the rubber match Thursday night.

During the nine-run inning the Pelicans sent 13 men to the plate and received bases-clearing triples from Kellin Deglan and Luis Sardinas. Royce Bolinger added an RBI double in the inning and Chris Grayson singled in a run. A ninth run scored on a wild pitch. Sardinas flied out to begin the inning but the next batter, Drew Robinson, reached on an error to begin the rally. At one point, nine straight Pelicans reached base.

Sardinas matched a career high with four hits on the night while Rougned Odor tallied a pair of hits.

Left-hander Victor Payano (4-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits over 6.2 innings. The left-hander had allowed just two base runners entering the seventh inning. The reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week struck out four and walked just two in a winning effort.

Right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Entering play, the Pelicans had not scored a run in 23.1 career innings against the Dash right-hander, who began the day with the second best ERA among qualifying starters in the Carolina League. Bassitt allowed all nine of the runs, eight earned, on nine hits over 2.1 innings.

The nine runs and nine hits in the third are the most the Pelicans have recorded in an inning this season. Seven of nine starters recorded at least a hit.

Right-hander Jose Monegro turned in 1.1 innings scoreless in his 2013 debut and Paul Schwendel allowed a run in the ninth inning.

The Birds and the Dash conclude a three-game series Thursday at BB&T Ballpark. Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff (2-2, 4.82) will be opposed by right-hander Chris Beck (2-5, 2.25). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 along with www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
