Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 15, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash had one rough inning, and it cost them dearly as they fell 9-2 to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
The big inning for the Pelicans (25-14) was the third against starter Chris Bassitt (4-1). With one out, a Winston-Salem (18-20) error preceded eight straight Myrtle Beach hits. A pair of singles loaded the bases, and Kellin Deglan brought in all three with a triple to give his team the game's first runs.
The Pelicans were far from done in the frame. Royce Bolinger and Chris Grayson followed the Deglan triple with run-producing knocks of their own, putting the visitors in front 5-0. Later in the frame, Myrtle Beach reloaded the bases for Luis Sardinas, who delivered the Pelicans' second three-run triple of the frame. That marked the end of the night for Bassitt, who was replaced by Brandon Hardin. Hardin uncorked a wild pitch with his first toss of the game, which allowed Sardinas to score and complete the nine-run onslaught.
The nine-run inning is the highest scoring inning allowed by the Dash since they gave up 10 in a frame against Potomac on July 25, 2010.
On the other side, Victor Payano (4-2) was very good, tossing his second consecutive quality start. The first Winston-Salem hit off the southpaw did not come until the fourth inning when Chris Curley knocked a single to left field.
The Dash did not get a runner into scoring position until the seventh inning when they scored their only run off Payano. Curley picked up his second hit of the night and would later come around to score on a single by Grant Buckner. Payano would leave during that frame, giving up just one run on three hits in six and two-thirds.
Overshadowed by the margin of victory was the Winston-Salem bullpen quartet of Hardin, Jarrett Casey, Terance Marin and Jason Van Skike, who collectively twirled six and two-third innings of shutout ball.
The final tally of the contest came in the bottom of the ninth when Kevan Smith started the inning with his team-leading third triple of the season, and Buckner brought him around on an RBI bounce out.
The Dash and Pelicans wrap up this three-game set on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Righty Chris Beck (2-5, 2.25 ERA) will toe the rubber for Winston-Salem, while Myrtle Beach will counter with a righty of their own, Jerad Eickhoff (2-2, 4.82 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:45 with the Pregame Dash on 600 AM-WSJS and wsdash.com, and first pitch is set for 7.
The Dash expect to reach their one millionth fan at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, May 16. On the night the Dash reach this milestone, one lucky fan will have be given a chance to win one million dollars. Visit wsdash.com to purchase tickets for this historic event.
