Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- RHP Wilfredo Boscan (4-11, 4.34) at RHP Cameron Bayne (11-7, 3.46) -

WALKING WOUNDED: Pelicans manager Jason Wood's originally announced lineup Saturday had the Pelicans' normal three-hole hitter and right fielder Jared Prince in his regular spot both defensively and in the order. During pregame work in the batting cage at Winston-Salem, though, Prince fouled a ball off of his leg and was scratched late from the thir game of four with the Dash. In his place, the Pelicans started Travis Adair in right field for the first time this year and moved regular shortstop/third baseman Jimmy Swift to left field, a position that Swift says he hadn't played since his childhood. More importantly, though, Prince's injury left the Pelicans with just nine healthy position players for Saturday night. Regular center fielder Ryan Strausborger was hit by a pitch in the base of his left hand Thursday night against Lynchburg and still had his hand wrapped in a light bandage prior to Saturday's affair at BB&T Ballpark. Along with David Paisano's Thursday promotion to Double-A Frisco, the Pelicans were already down one man in their position player ranks and had sto start both catchers Saturday with Vinny DiFazio serving as the team's designated hitter.

MAC'S BACK: Just over a week after the return of third baseman Mike Olt to the lineup, the Pelicans will be getting their original three-hole hitter back this week, as well. First baseman Chris McGuiness, who batted in the spot in front of Olt for the bulk of the season's first half, is slated to return to the team for Myrtle Beach's series at Wilmington this week. McGuiness, who has been out of action in the Carolina League since July, exactly one month after Olt's broken collarbone sent him on the DL for over two months, played yesterday in the AZL and homered for the Rangers in his second rehab contest, an 8-0 victory over the AZL Royals. McGuiness has battled a series of ailments this year including an oblique strain that sent him onto the DL in April, a back injury that again DLed him in May, and a knee problem that removed him from action in July. In McGuiness's one healthy month of April, the left-handed first baseman batted .305 with seven runs batted in, and a .790 OPS and was named the Rangers' Minor League Defender of the Month for a perfect 15 games in the field. During his injury-plagued months of May, June, and July, though, McGuiness batted a combined .171 (19-for-111) with one homer and 13 runs batted in over just 31 games to drop his overall season average to .218 and his OPS to .618

ADAIR UP'AIR: For the first time this season, Travis Adair found himself atop the Pelicans order for Saturday night's third game at Winston-Salem. An otherwise ordinary distinction in the top spot in the order is a 2011 milestone one for Adair, however, as the order's top spot was the only one in which the outfielder/second baseman hadn't batted this year. In addition to his leadoff start Saturday, Adair has batted second (11 times), third (11), cleanup (once), fifth (nine), sixth (18), seventh (six), eighth (twice), and ninth (five).
