Dash Blast Boscan, Pelicans out of Winston
August 28, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Andy Wilkins connected with a two-strike grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to break open the series finale, and the Winston-Salem Dash rolled over Wilfredo Boscan and the Pelicans Sunday afternoon for an 8-2 victory that achieved both a Winston series win in the four-game set and a 10-10 split in the season series between the two possible Carolina League Southern Division first-round playoff opponents.
A frustrating season for Boscan with runners aboard continued to be so Sunday. Already trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Boscan fell apart on a day that, to that point, had been a relatively good one. Dan Wagner and Tyler Saladino led off the inning with bunt singles, and Juan Silverio followed with a bloop to left to load the bases with nobody out. After getting ahead of Wilkins early in the count, things moved even, and when Boscan left a 2-2 offering hanging over the plate, Wilkins made him pay. The first baseman's grand slam left BB&T Ballpark to the concourse in right-center field and gave the Dash a commanding 7-2 lead.
Boscan (4-12) moved into a three-way tie for the most losses in Minor League Baseball this year, taking his 12th Carolina League defeat in addition to three he suffered in the Texas League at the start of the season, by allowing all seven Winston-Salem runs earned on nine hits over five innings of work. Boscan entered the afternoon with opposing hitters batting .374 (40-for-107) against him with runners in scoring position. Winston went 4-for-8 in such situations on Sunday to lift Boscan's BAA to a dismal .383.
The Pelicans did score the game's first run and owned a brief lead after the first half-inning of play. Santiago Chirino singled with one out in the first inning and scored on Jared Prince's RBI double to the left-center field wall one batter later. The Birds wouldn't see the top side again as Juan Silverio's one-out, 0-2 homer off Boscan in the bottom of the first got the game tied before Winston plated a pair to take the lead for good in the bottom of the second.
In the third, Myrtle Beach cut Winston's lead to 3-2 on Prince's sacrifice fly scoring Travis Adair who had doubled two batters earlier. The Pelicans put just three men past first the rest of the way. Dash right-hander Cameron Bayne (12-7) stifled Myrtle Beach's weak road bats with seven innings of two-run ball, striking out seven while walking two. As a team in the series, the Pelicans batted .198 (23-for-116) with just six runs scored.
Myrtle Beach will face Winston-Salem in next week's Carolina League Southern Division Championship Series if the Dash can hold off the second-place Kinston Indians the rest of the way. After going 8-3 against Winston-Salem in the season's first half, the Pelicans dropped seven of the final nine contests between the two clubs including.
The Pelicans hit the road Sunday night to Wilmington, Delaware and their final road series of the 2011 season, a four-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
