Keys Salvage Split

August 28, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

In what may have been a Northern Division Championship Series Preview, the Keys and Potomac Nationals split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon putting to wraps the Keys 2011 regular season campaign at home. A crowd of 5,711 came out to root on the Keys who had more fans enter the gates in 2011 than in any season since 2002.

The Keys led for much of Game One but could not hang on. Leading 1-0 in the sixth inning, Keys starter Nathan Moreau walked LF Francisco Soriano and then allowed a two-run home run to left field by 2B Jeff Kobernus and Potomac had a 2-1 lead. It was 3-1 in the seventh when Keys 3B Dale Mollenhauer homered to right field but the rally fell short. The Nationals took the opener 3-2.

Future Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez rehabbed for the Nationals as its starting catcher in game two. He homered to center field in his first at-bat and went 1-for-3 in the game.

The Keys would battle back as RF Steve Bumbry and 2B Jonathan Schoop walked to open the game. Next up was SS Manny Machado who doubled them both home with a shot to the left-center field alleyway. The double was the lone Keys hit in a three-run first inning.

Potomac though tied the game with home runs from Kobernus and LF Francisco Soriano. Knotted in the fifth inning the Keys rallied for a run. With runners at the corners, Schoop singled to right on a hit and run and Frederick grabbed a 4-3 lead.

Starter Jake Pettit (6-0) got the win but RHP Ryan O'Shea entered for the final two innings of work. A former collegiate closer, O'Shea shut the door on Potomac to register his first save of the year in the Keys 4-3 win.

With the win the Keys have clinched its best regular season record in franchise history.

The Keys will head to Kinston, NC looking for its 80th win of the year. RHP Scott Copeland will be on the hill for the Keys. First pitch is 7:00 p.m. with coverage beginning 20 minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source and wthu.com.

Come show your pride as playoff tickets are available for the Keys run towards a fourth Mills Cup. Game One of the Northern Division Championship Series will be Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m. For tickets call the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
