Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Aaron Shafer (3-3, 3.05) at RHP Barret Loux (8-5, 3.33)
THE BATS ARE BACK: The Pelicans had a miserable four games at the plate from Friday to Monday. In losing three in Frederick and the series opener against Lynchburg, they scored only two runs and notched only 13 hits in going 0-4. Myrtle Beach snapped out of their .112 funk by tallying nine runs and 16 hits in their first ten offensive innings last night.
THIS SEEMS FAMILIAR: Amazingly, last night's double shutout was not the Pelicans' first of 2011. Myrtle Beach also whitewashed the Kinston Indians in both ends of a doubleheader on May 11, 6-0 and 2-0. Joe Wieland threw a two-hitter and faced the minimum 21 in the opener and Ryan Kelly followed with six scoreless frames of three-hit ball in the finale.
BELL OF THE BALLGAME: After Justin Grimm won the doubleheader opener with six shutout innings, reliever Chad Bell made a spot start in the second game and was even better, setting down 15 of the 16 batters he faced. The only man to reach against the lefty was Barrett Kleinknecht, who doubled to lead off the third. Bell has been stellar since tossing five shutout frames with eight K's in the 23-inning game in Kinston on June 12. Starting with that game, he's allowed only four earned runs in 27 innings (1.33 ERA) over his last 11 appearances.
TAKE THAT!: Travis Adair continued to torment the Atlanta Braves' Advanced-A affiliate, going 6-for-6 in last night's doubleheader. The Woodruff, SC native was drafted by the Braves in 2008 and released after two seasons in their farm system. He signed on with the Rangers and has had a big year against Lynchburg, the affiliate of his former parent club. In seven games against the Hillcats, Travis has gone 12-for-24 in running up a .500 batting average.
OUCH!: Jared Prince was plunked by a pitch for the third straight game in the opener of last night's doubleheader. The leadoff HBP in the second against Lynchburg starter Zeke Spruill was his second in as many trips to the plate and his 22nd of the season. The Carolina League all-time record is now reasonably in his sights. Seth Loman of Winston-Salem was hit 30 times last season and Prince is on pace to equal that mark. Jared has been hit 12 times in his last 29 games, and 16 times in his last 39, so the pace is picking up. With 37 games to play, the milestone watch is getting started.
