Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Michael Mariot (5-2, 3.25) at RHP Wilfredo Boscan (3-6, 4.50)
NOW IT'S JUST GETTING RIDICULOUS: Jared Bolden earned well-deserved Carolina League Player of the Week honors on Monday and he's kept up his torrid hitting pace. Last night's three-hit game was his seventh straight contest with multiple hits. During the streak he's 19-for-35 (.543) with four homers, 13 RBIs and ten runs scored. Batting .247 on July 1, the Lynchburg, VA native has hit .474 (27-57) over his last 14 games to raise his average 51 points and soar to fourth on the Carolina League leaderboard with a .298 mark.
EXTRA KINGS: The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have been working the most overtime in all of minor league baseball. Last night's thrilling 14-inning victory marked the 16th time that the Birds have gone longer than regulation. No other team in any league has taken part in more extra-inning affairs. Three clubs have played in 15, including the Birds' Carolina League Southern Division rivals, the Winston-Salem Dash. Myrtle Beach's fellow Rangers' farm club, the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, have 15 as well in the Texas League as do the Baltimore Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides of the International League.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: One key to the Birds' six-game winning streak has been strong outings out of the bullpen. Over the last five games, nine Myrtle Beach relievers have combined to toss 23 and one-third scoreless innings. Joe Ortiz and the now promoted Johan Yan picked up two outs apiece to close out Thursday's win. On Friday, Ryan Kelly's three shutout frames and Zach Osborne's two opened the door for a comeback. Saturday brought seven goose eggs, four from Kennil Gomez, one and two thirds from Chad Bell and one and a third from Ryan Rodebaugh in his first victory as a Pelican. Kasey Kiker posted two zeroes on Monday but the best performance was Tuesday, when Trevor Hurley, Ortiz, Osborne and Kelly ran up eight zeroes in the 14-inning win.
HUGE TURNAROUND: Both Jared Bolden and Jared Prince were mired in brutal slumps to begin the 2011 season, and both have recovered remarkably to rank in the CL's top ten in batting average. Bolden started 2-for-32 (.063), but has hit .332 since to raise his average to a .298 clip that is now the fourth-best in the Carolina League. Prince was in a 2-for-34 hole (.059) before raising his average to .284, ranking seventh in the loop. Prince also moved past Frederick outfielder Steven Bumbry for the league lead in on base percentage at .386. He leads the circuit in hit by pitches with 19 and with only 35 strikeouts in 389 plate appearances, is the second-toughest hitter in the league to whiff.
SWEET 16: Pelicans catcher Zach Zaneski can become the first Carolina Leaguer to hit in 17 consecutive games this year with a base knock tonight. The former Rhode Island Ram's 16-game streak is tied with teammate Ryan Strausborger and Frederick's Miguel Abreu, who ran up 16-gamers earlier this year. Zaneski's run began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. "Z" is batting .297 (22-74) during this stretch and has raised his average to .298 and is only 43 plate appearances shy of qualifying for fifth in the league behind Jared Bolden.
