Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Anthony Ranaudo (1-4, 4.46) at RHP Justin Grimm (2-2, 3.40)

ANOTHER MILESTONE: Last night's win was the Pelicans' 50th of the season. At 50-40 the Birds reached the 50-win plateau nearly a month sooner than they did last year. They didn't reach that mark until August 12th in their 117th game.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Pelicans are finally back in Myrtle Beach after a 3-7 ten-game trek that took them up to Lynchburg, down to Winston-Salem and all the way back up to Wilmington. They're happy to be back on the Grand Strand as an 8-3 win Wednesday and last night's 6-5 victory improved their league-leading home record to 28-12 (.700). Their mark at BB&T Coastal Field is more than 100 percentage points better than 28-21 Frederick and 24-18 Wilmington (both .571), who are tied for the second-best home record in the loop. So far the Birds are 2-0 to begin a stretch 21 out of 27 games at home.

BOLD STROKES: After Jared Bolden cracked two-run homers in consecutive at bats, in the ninth-inning in Wilmington on Monday and in the first frame Wednesday against the Red Sox, he continued to rake in last night's win. In his first three plate appearances he walked, singled and doubled, scoring twice. Over his past ten games, the Lynchburg, VA native is 15-for-34 (.441) with two homers, five doubles, eight RBIs and eight runs scored.

THEY'VE COME A LONG WAY: Both Jared Bolden and Jared Prince were mired in brutal slumps to begin the 2011 season, and both have recovered remarkably. Prince was in a 2-for-34 hole (.059) before raising his average to a .278 clip that is the ninth-highest in the Carolina League. Bolden started 2-for-32 (.063), but has hit .310 since to raise his average to .276, 13th in the circuit.

THE 'BOS' IS BACK: Wilfredo Boscan returned to form last night in winning his first game in nearly a month. He shut out the Red Sox for five innings on one hit before single runs in the sixth and seventh ended his night. He posted six and two-thirds innings of two-run, five-hit ball. He had lost his previous four starts with an ERA of 6.97. Over his prior five outings, he went 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in outdueling opposing aces Jake Odorizzi of Wilmington, Drew Pomeranz of Kinston and Frederick's Bobby Bundy.

UNO, DOS, TRES, CATORCE!: After a day off on Thursday, Zach Zaneski goes into tonight carrying a hitting streak of 14 consecutive games. The run began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. The former Rhode Island Ram's streak is tied for the third longest in the Carolina League this season, the injured Peter Hissey of Salem and Winston-Salem's Ian Gac have also run up 14-gamers. "Z" is batting .313 (20-64) during this stretch and has raised his average to .303 and is only 42 plate appearances shy of qualifying.
