Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - Noel Arguelles turned in his shortest outing of the season as the Wilmington Blue Rocks watched the Frederick Keys jump out to an early five-run lead and then hold on down the stretch for a 6-4 victory on Friday night at Frawley Stadium.

It was clear right from the first pitch that it would not be Arguelles' night. The left-hander issued walks to the first two batters of the game. He was able to escape the jam unscathed by inducing a 5-4-3 double play, but he would not be so fortunate an inning later.

The Cuban native took the hill in the top of the second with a 1-0 lead and promptly retired two Frederick batters. Michael Flacco changed everything though when he laced a double into the left-field corner. From that point forward the floodgates opened and Wilmington's hopes were sunk.

The next five hitters reached safely. Bobby Stevens legged out an infield single to short and Justin Dalles drove in a run with his line-drive single to left. Steve Bumbry and Jonathan Schoop each followed with their second walks of the night. That set up Manny Machado's bases-clearing double to the right-center field alley.

That was the last straw for Wilmington manager Brian Rupp, who pulled Arguelles after he allowed five runs on four hits and four walks in only 1.2 frames.

The Keys would manage just one run against three Wilmington relievers over the final 7.1 innings, but the deficit was too large for the Blue Crew to overcome.

Still, Wilmington would not go down without a fight. The Rocks whittled Frederick's 6-1 advantage down to two scores in the bottom of the fourth. Travis Jones got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly to right. Ryan Stovall came home on a Frederick error and Whit Merrifield scored Deivy Batista with his double to right.

The Rocks had two golden opportunities to pull even late. Wilmington loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but failed to push even a single score across. The Blue Crew then stranded men at first and second in the eighth. Both rallies ended with Yem Prades at the plate.

Frederick starter Nathan Moreau (10-6) scattered four runs over 5.1 innings pitched to earn his league-leading 10th victory of the season. Sean Gleason recorded the final five outs to nail down his Carolina League best 25th save.

Wilmington looks to bounce back as it wraps up this four-game series with the Keys at Frawley Stadium on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Tyler Sample (6-6, 4.54) hits the hill for the Rocks against Frederick right-hander Ryhoei Tanaka (5-3, 3.32). Broadcast coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu. The night will feature another performance by the Cowboy Monkeys. For tickets call 302-888-BLUE or visit bluerocks.com.
