Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LHP Drew Pomeranz (2-2, 1.81) at LHP Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.67)
A CAREER NIGHT: Barret Loux has been one of the most effective starters in the Carolina League this season and last night may have been the finest outing of his young career. The righty struck out 11 Kinston Indians in six shutout innings, surpassing the ten he ran up in Potomac on May 2. In his first season of professional ball, the former Texas A&M Aggie is 7-3 and ranks third in the Carolina League in strikeouts (92) while posting the fifth-lowest opponent batting average (.231). In his last eight starts, Loux is 5-0 with a 2.27 ERA.
WALKING THE TIGHTROPE: The Pelicans played another one-run game last night, falling 1-0. Exactly half of Myrtle Beach's 32 losses have been by a single run. The close games have become quite common in the Carolina League this season, as 106 of the 308 games played in the league this season have been decided by one run (34.4%). Incorporating the 62 two-run affairs as well, 168 of the 308 contests, more than half, have been one or two-run games (54.5 %).
SEE-SAW MONTH: The Pelicans had an up-and-down month of June. They began the month with records of 2-5 and 6-9 as the Kinston Indians quickly gained ground in the Southern Division standings. The Birds held them off on the first half's final weekend as they swept three games from Frederick to clinch the first-half crown and their first postseason berth since 2008. Myrtle Beach's solid play carried through the All-Star break as they won four of their first five games and won their first two series. Despite the rocky start, the Pelicans still finished June with a winning record of 14-12. That's the fourth-best mark for the month behind Kinston (18-9), Frederick (16-10) and Potomac (15-11) The Birds did top the league in batting average with a .273 June clip.
