Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Where to begin' The Pelicans and Kinston Indians apparently did not want to finish their three-game weekend series at Grainger Stadium on Sunday. The rubber game was the longest contest in the 66-year history of the Carolina League, going 23 innings before Casey Frawley's walk-off single gave the K-Tribe a 3-2 win. Down to their last out in the ninth, the Birds battled back off top-closer Preston Guilmet to tie the game at two. That score held until the 23rd in a game that lasted six hours and twenty-seven minutes. Myrtle Beach hurlers racked up 32 strikeouts in the marathon. Zach Osborne threw four innings of scoreless relief and Chad Bell followed with five.
THIS IS THE GAME THAT NEVER EEEEEENDS: It just goes on and on, my friends. The 23-inning affair between the Pelicans and Kinston Indians was the 36,601st game in the history of the Carolina League and it was only the fourth to go 20 innings or more. The Birds have played two in the past 13 months, going 20 in Winston-Salem on May 19, 2010. In this record-breaking affair, 15 players logged eight or more at bats and both catchers, Zach Zaneski of Myrtle Beach and Kinston's Roberto Perez, caught every inning. 15 pitchers, seven for the Pelicans and eight for the K-Tribe, combined to throw 654 pitches, 339 of them by Myrtle Beach. It was the second 23-inning game in Minor League Baseball this season, Jupiter won 2-1 at home against Clearwater in a Florida State League game on May 23.
ACE OF BASE: With two hits in Sunday's marathon, Ryan Strausborger extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games. The Carolina League All-Star's run began May 19 in Winston-Salem and is one shy of equaling the longest streak in the circuit this season. Tyler Holt of Kinston had a 25-game run in May. Strausborger is batting .333 with a .379 on base percentage during the streak. Ryan has also hit safely in 12 straight games, the Pelicans' longest streak of the season. The longest hitting streaks in the Carolina League in 2011 belong to Ian Gac of Winston-Salem and Salem's Peter Hissey, who both ran up 14-game streaks in April.
