THE HILLCATS: Monday, the Hillcats beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 5-0...Lynchburg starter Blaine Sims (2-0) tossed six scoreless innings and earned the win...He combined with relievers Andrew Wilson, Matthew Frevert, and Eliecer Cardenas for the shutout...The Hillcats sit in third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 11.5 games back of the first place Frederick Keys...
VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats are 5-2 against the Blue Rocks this season...Lynchburg's pitching has held Wilmington to two or less runs in each of the five victories this season...Last season, Lynchburg lost the season series to Wilmington 8-12...Myrtle Beach (2010 Braves Advance-A affiliate) however, won 11 of their 20 match-ups with the Blue Rocks a season ago...
WELCOME BACK BATS: After only scoring seven runs over the previous five games, the Hillcats tallied five last night on their way to a 5-0 win...The 'Cats hit two home runs snapping a six-game homerless drought, and had three doubles as well...The five extra base hits, matched the five Lynchburg had totaled in the five prior games...Hitting just .145 (22-152) as a team in the five games leading up to last night, the 'Cats had dropped their batting average by 10 points, from .270 to now .260...Last night's 10-hit effort raised the team clip to .261, still best in the league...
IT'S A TEAM EFFORT: LHP Blaine Sims made a spot start for the Hillcats last night, as starter Willie Kempf was transferred to Low-A Rome last week leaving an open window in the rotation...Sims responded with a season-high six innings pitched, and did not allow a run...As Sims had not thrown more than five innings all season long, six was long enough, and he handed the ball over the bullpen, which could use the work after Zeke Spruill tossed a complete game the night before...Lynchburg sent a new arm to the mound in each of the final three innings as the 'Cats staff completed their fourth shutout of the season...
ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED: The Carolina League announced the roster for the 2011 Mid-season All-Star Team last Thursday afternoon...Three Hillcats were selected...Andrelton Simmons will start at shortstop, Joey Terdoslavich will start at third base, and Todd Cunningham will be a reserve outfielder...It will be the first All-Star appearances for each Hillcat...With the three selections, the Hillcats boast the most position players on the roster this season...The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Wilmington Blue Rocks tied for most selections overall with four each...This year, the Modesto Nuts will host the All-Star game June 21 at John Thurman Field in Modesto, CA...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Seven members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
SNAP OUT OF IT: INF Joe Leonard entered last night's game in a 2-for-24 slump...He went 2-for-3 with a double and his third home run of the season...He drove in two runs and scored twice as well...Leonard had missed a week's worth of game May 28-June 5 with a sore elbow...In his first seven games back before last night, he was just 4-for 29 with 11 strikeouts...Leonard had only struck out 25 times in his previous 38 games prior to that seven game stretch...His homer last night was his first since April 30 and came on his 100th at-bat since that home run...
TOUGH BREAK: C Braeden Schlehuber hit the disabled list again Friday...While attempting to put down a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning Thursday night, his right index finger was struck by the pitch...The ball split open the tip of his finger so bad that he would have to exit the game and require stitches...C Shawn McGill ran in from the bullpen to enter the at-bat with a 1-2 count, runners at first and second and the score tied 1-1...He would ground into a 6-4-3 double play, adding insult to injury as they say...
PLAYER OF THE MONTH: INF Joey Terdoslavich was honored as the Carolina League Player of the Month for May as voted by the league's managers...Terdoslavich hit .304 (31-for-102) with four home runs and 20 RBI in 27 games last month...He is second in the league in home runs with 11 on the season...He also racked up 11 doubles in May, and currently has 18 total, tying him for second in the league as well...His average went from .243 to .279 during the month...The honor was the first weekly or monthly award of his career...So far in June, he is hitting just .217 with no home runs, and two RBI in 12 games...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER (GM 1): RHP Elisaul Pimentel was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Dodgers in 2008...Was traded to the Royals from the Dodgers as part of a package for Scott Podsednik July 28, 2010...Currently 3-3 with a 4.58 ERA...Won Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 30-June 5...He pitched eight scoreless innings against Potomac on June 4, giving up just one hit...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER (GM 2): RHP Michael Mariot was selected in the eighth round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Nebraska...Played for Idaho Falls in the Pioneer League after signing in 2010, where he split time between the rotation and bullpen...Named to the 2011 Carolina League All-Star team...Making only his second start of the season...In his last start, June 7 at Kinston, gave up five runs on nine hits in three and two-thirds innings...Currently, in 12 games, 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA...
