Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 14, 2011) - Winston-Salem committed a season-high six errors leading to four unearned runs on the way to an 8-3 loss to Frederick on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The bizarre game saw the teams combine for ten errors, five unearned runs, and five batters hit batsmen.

Uneven Dash fielding was prevalent early in the ballgame, as Winston committed five errors in the first four innings. In the opening frame, Bobby Stevens reached when he was hit by the first pitch of the game from Ryan Buch. With Dale Mollenhauer at the plate, Stevens stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Mike Blanke. Mollenhauer then singled to right field to score Stevens.

The Keys (41-24) took advantage of more fielding blunders in the second when Jacob Julius doubled to lead off and scored on a fielding error by Tyler Saladino with two outs. The error was Saladino's first in 32 games with the Dash.

Mollenhauer led off the third inning for Frederick with a single. He moved to second base when Tyler Kolodny was hit by a pitch. Miguel Abreu then hit a soft ground ball to first base that Andy Wilkins fielded and threw to a covering Buch, but Buch missed the toss and was charged with an error. Mollenhauer came around to score on the miscue. Julius followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, putting the Keys up 4-0.

Winston (29-36) halved that lead in the fifth when the first three batters reached on base hits. Austin Yount singled to begin the inning, and advanced to third when Daniel Wagner doubled. Saladino drove in Yount with a single, and Wagner scored on a double play groundout by Jared Mitchell.

Buch ran into trouble in his last inning. Julius was hit by a pitch to start the sixth and was retired when Adam Donachie reached on a fielder's choice. Joe Oliveira then doubled to put runners at second and third. Garabez Rosa grounded a 2-2 pitch to first base where Andy Wilkins tagged the bag and started a double play that ended with Donachie bowling over Blanke to end the inning. When all was said and done, the twin killing was scored 3-6-2-4-2 and ended a scoreless sixth.

Buch was chased from the game after that frame. He gave up four runs, but only one was earned because of the five errors. Reliever Santos Rodriguez entered the game and walked Stevens to start the seventh. Mollenhauer hit a fly ball to right field that Jose Martinez dropped, but threw in time to second to retire Stevens on a fielder's choice. The next batter, Jonathan Schoop, lined a pitch to right field that glanced off the glove of a diving Martinez. Schoop took second base on what was ruled a single and an error by Martinez, the sixth of the game for Winston. Kolodny drove home Mollenhauer with a sac fly, and Abreu singled to score Schoop and put the Keys up by four.

Frederick broke the game open in the ninth inning against Matt Wickswat. Stevens and Mollenhauer hit successive singles to start, and both crossed home on Kolodny's one-out double.

Winston-Salem scored once in the ninth when Yount reached on an error and scored on a sac fly by Saladino.

Buch (1-3) took the loss after his six innings. Oliver Drake (5-3) allowed two runs (all earned) on eight hits in 7.2 innings to pick up the win. Will Startup came into the game in the eighth with the tying run on deck and finished up the ballgame to earn his first save of the season.

The six errors for the Dash was a season-high for Winston-Salem, surpassing a four-error mark set against the Keys on April 25. Saladino, Buch, and Martinez each had one error and Blanke registered three. All of Blanke's errors came on throws to second base trying to nab a base-stealer.

Winston-Salem and Frederick conclude their three-game series Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Cameron Bayne (5-4, 4.10) is scheduled to start for the Dash against LHP Nick Haughian (3-3, 4.14).
