Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

RHP Justin Grimm (2-0, 1.42) at RHP Andre Rienzo (1-1, 2.91)

STOP THE PRESSES: Joe Wieland walked somebody. With two outs in the seventh, the right-hander dealt ball four on a payoff pitch to Jake Oester. It was the first base on balls issued by Wieland since April 18, snapping a string of 64 innings and 227 batters faced since his last free pass. Ironically, his last walk was also at home against Winston-Salem when he lost Andy Wilkins. The Reno native has walked four batters overall in 72 innings in 2011. That gives him the third-best walks per nine innings ratio in all of minor leagues (0.50). Brad Meyers (AA/AAA - WAS) has a ratio of 0.38 and Carlos Quevedo (A - HOU) has a 0.45 mark.

ACE OF BASE: It went down to the wire, but Ryan Strausborger singled in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 19 consecutive games. He came around to score the tying run with two outs on Jared Prince's single. The Osceola, IN native's run began on May 19 in Winston-Salem and is now tied with Prince for the team's longest consecutive on-base stretch of the season. He is batting .319 with a .367 on base percentage during the streak that is tied for the third-longest run in the Carolina League this year. Tyler Holt of Kinston had a 25-gamer in May and Salem's Reynaldo Rodriguez had a streak of 21 games.

SCOREBOARD WATCHING: Although the Pelicans lost again last night they maintained a lead in the Southern Division of three and a half games. After the K-Tribe fell 8-2 in Wilmington, the Pelicans' magic number to clinch the first-half title and a postseason berth dropped to ten. The Birds have 12 games left on their first-half schedule while the Indians have 13. The two clubs will square off in Kinston this weekend for a three-game series.
