Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats tied a season-high with 16 hits on Tuesday night. On Wednesday night, the Lynchburg bats went cold, mustering just one run on five hits against the Salem staff, and fell 6-1.
Salem scored first in the top of the fourth inning. The Red Sox had the bases loaded with two outs and Peter Hissey hit a dribbler between the mound and first base. Pitcher Willie Kempf came off the mound, and bobbled the ball, causing the throw to first to arrive late. Shannon Wilkerson scored from third, and the runner on second, David Mailman, rounded third and tried to score. First baseman Joey Terdoslavich threw to the plate to get Mailman, ending the inning with only one run scoring.
Salem scored three more in the top of the fifth. The big blow in the inning was a two-run home run by Reynaldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez was the last batter Kempf (3-5) faced after he tossed over 100 pitches.
The Red Sox took advantage of another Hillcats error in the seventh. Dan Butler was standing on first, and Shannon Wilkerson dropped a bunt down the third base line. Third baseman Joe Leonard picked it up and made a late throw to first. The throw also got past first baseman Joey Terdoslavich, and each runner advanced one base. Both came around to score in the inning, though only one run was earned, to give Salem a 6-0 lead.
Anthony Ranaudo shut down the Hillcats in his second start for Salem this season. Ranaudo (1-1) pitched six shutout innings and only gave up two hits in his first Carolina League win.
The Hillcats had two hits in the ninth inning, including an RBI double by Andrelton Simmons, to break the shutout. However, it wasn't enough, and Lynchburg lost to Salem 6-1.
The series, and the eight-game homestand, ends on Thursday night. Lefty Chris Masters (4-2) will pitch for Lynchburg, and lefty Chris Hernandez (5-3) will take the mound for Salem. First pitch is at 7:05 pm, and the gates will open at 6.
If you can't make it to the game, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 6:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
