Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans avoided the six-game sweep by taking the final game of the series by a final of 6-1 over the Charleston RiverDogs. The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Birds and prevents Charleston from claiming their second six-game sweep of the season, and eighth straight win. Myrtle Beach's record improves to 18-23 with the win, while Charleston now stands at 26-14.

Struggling to find hitting all series, the Birds' bats awoke for six runs off seven hits in the rain-shortened game. Pablo Aliendo (1-2, HR, 3 RBI) and Jordan Nwogu (1-2, HR, RBI) came together to support the lineup with a pair of home runs in the third inning. Jonathan Sierra (2-3) also collected multiple hits in the contest.

Manuel Espinoza (2-4) gathered his second win of the season after throwing a career-high 5.2 scoreless innings with four hits allowed and seven strikeouts. The outing is the longest by a Pelican this season. Joe Nahas threw the final 1.1 innings allowing the only RiverDogs run off two hits.

The RiverDogs combined for six hits with Osleivis Basabe (2-4, RBI) driving in the lone run for the visitors. Garrett Hiott (2-3) picked up his first multi-hit game of the season.

Charleston starting pitcher Jose Lopez (3-3) took the loss after tossing the opening two innings and allowing just one run off two hits while walking three. Graeme Stinson allowed the majority of the runs by pitching the five-run third and giving up two home runs.

For the first time this series, the Pelicans took the lead first in the second inning. Aliendo drew a walk to lead off the frame and Sierra blasted a double that one-hopped the wall to put runners at second and third. Nwogu loaded the bases by working a walk and Luis Verdugo followed by grounding out to short for a double play as Aliendo scored the first run of the game.

The Pelicans built on their lead in the third inning with five runs coming across to score. Ezequiel Pagan started the inning with a double to center field and was moved to third when Ed Howard flew out to right. After Jacob Wetzel drew a walk, Pagan scored when RiverDogs' catcher Jonathan Embry tried to pick him off at third and his throw skipped into left field. Myrtle Beach wouldn't stop there, as Ryan Reynolds was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, and Aliendo hit everybody home with his second home run of the season to left field to extend the Birds' lead to 5-0. Nwogu came up two batters later and lifted a solo homer over the left field bleachers to make it a six-run lead.

Charleston was held scoreless until their half of the seventh. Nahas retired the first two batters then gave up a single to Johan Lopez. Embry worked a two-out walk and Basabe rolled a single to left field to score Lopez and cut into the lead at 6-1. After Nahas got out of the inning, the rain came pouring down and the game was called.

The Pelicans will travel to Columbia to take on the Fireflies with game one on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
