SALISBURY, MD - After being no-hit for the first eight innings, the Delmarva Shorebirds made a late charge that came up just short in a 3-2 defeat against the Salem Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The loss to the Red Sox (23-19) meant the Shorebirds (25-15) failed to secure at least a split of a series for the first time this season.

Scoreless through the first two innings, Nick Yorke blasted a solo homer over the wall in left, his first of the season, to give Salem a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Stephen Scott and Jaxx Groshans walked to start the frame before Ceddanne Rafaela beat out a bunt base hit to load the bases. Nick Northcut then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Scott and made it 2-0 Salem.

Scott then began the sixth with another free pass and proceeded to swipe second one out later. After a fly out, Northcut ripped a single to center, scoring Scott, to put the Red Sox ahead 3-0.

The Shorebirds offense was no-hit for the first eight innings of the contest until Mason Janvrin led off the ninth with a single to center. After a groundout moved Janvrin to second, Darell Hernaiz worked a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Hudson Haskin came through as he smoked a two-run double to left center to cut the deficit to one for Delmarva. TT Bowens nearly walked the Red Sox off but his deep fly ball to left came up feet short of escaping the yard and Dylan Harris then flew out to right to end the game.

Aaron Perry (3-1) earned the win for Salem with two no-hit innings, walking one and striking out four.

Noah Denoyer (3-2) started for Delmarva and suffered his second defeat of the series. The righty allowed two runs on four hits, walking three while striking out four.

Cody Scroggins earned his fourth save of the season (third of the series) despite allowing the only two Shorebirds hits of the game and conceding two runs as well as a walk.

Jeremy Wu-Yelland started for Salem and worked the first four innings in no-hit fashion, facing the minimum while striking out four.

Haskin and Janvrin collected the only hits of the game for Delmarva, a single for Janvrin and a two-run double for Haskin.

Salem was led by Yorke who smashed his first career homer in a two-hit performance. Groshans (2-for-3) and Rafaela (2-for-4) also collected two hits apiece for the Red Sox.

After a day off on Monday, the Shorebirds begin a six-game series with the Fredericksburg Nationals on Tuesday, June 22 at Perdue Stadium. Starters for the series opener have yet to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage of the contest beginning at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 960 AM and MiLB.TV with Sam Jellinek on the call.
