Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - Potomac swept a quasi-double header from Myrtle Beach at Pfitzner Stadium Monday night, taking the conclusion of Sunday's suspended game 6-0 before besting the Birds 4-3 in the regularly-schedule nightcap to sweep the four-game series. The Nationals improved to 35-27 in the second half and 64-66 overall with the wins, while Myrtle Beach fell to 28-35 and 58-74 and is mired in its second six-game losing streak this month.
Already armed with a 4-0 lead when the opening game resumed, Potomac left-hander Ross Detwiler looked every bit a first-round draft pick as he allowed only two singles and a walk over the final six innings. The Nationals got two unearned insurance runs off of Jeff Lyman in the fifth on Matt Rogelstad's sacrifice fly and Marvin Lowrance's RBI single to account for the final margin.
The Pelicans didn't go quietly in the series finale, scoring twice and getting the potential tying run on base before Potomac closer Josh Perrault finally thwarted the rally. Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the seventh, J.D. Roberts worked Perrault for a leadoff walk. Brandon Monk followed two batters later with a booming RBI double off the left field wall to score Roberts all the way from first and cut the deficit to 4-2. Jordan Schafer flied out for the second out, but Michael Fisher kept hope alive with a run-scoring single up the middle to bring the Pelicans to within a run. Willie Cabrera made a bid to tie the game with a liner down the right field line, but it sliced just barely foul and he grounded out to end the game a few pitches later.
Detwiler (2-2) earned the win for Potomac in the opener with six near-flawless innings, while Deunte Heath (2-3) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs and four hits in heavy rain Sunday night. Former Baylor University standout Cory van Allen (3-6) got his second win of the season against Myrtle Beach in game two, holding the Pelicans to one run and five hits in five innings. He walked two and set a new season-high with eight strikeouts. Drese (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in four innings of work. Perrault notched his fourth save. Monk had a big game in the nightcap, racking up three hits while driving in a run and scoring a run as well. Fisher and Quentin Davis both had two hits.
The Pelicans now head home for the final home stand of the season, a week-long affair featuring four games with Frederick and three with the Kinston Indians. The Pelicans will start Dustin Evans (2-9, 4.55 ERA) in the series opener against the Keys Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., and the game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com. The home stand will be highlighted by NASCAR night on Saturday, September 1st at 7:05 p.m. and the final post-game fireworks show of the season on Sunday, September 2nd as part of Fan Appreciation Night at 6:05 p.m. On Monday, September 3rd the Pelicans close out the season with their final home game of the year at 7:05 p.m.
