Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, fell for the first time in six days Monday night on Ernie Shore Field as the Winston-Salem Warthogs grabbed a 9-4 win. The âhogs scored four in the eighth to stifle a Salem rally.
The Avs (34-29) trailed Winston-Salem (23-38) 5-2 when the eighth inning began. Mitch Einertson opened the frame with a single against John Lujan who walked the next batter, Mark Ori. After Ryan Reed singled, the Avs loaded the bases. Orlando Rosales followed with a strikeout. Chris Johnson then fleid a ball to right that scored Einertson and cut the lead to two. Subsequently, Jose Lopez punched a ball into center that brought Ori home. On the play, though, Paulo Orlando threw Ryan Reed out at third to end the inning.
In the home half, Winston-Salem batted around in response. The first two batters reached on singles against Jeff Wigdahl. After a strikeout of Rod Allen Jr., the Avs intentionally walked Paulo Orlando. Next, Robert Valido pasted a two-run single to center for a 7-4 lead. Salem walked the following batter, Daron Roberts, to load the bases for Micah Schnurstein who singled two more runs home and pushed the game to its final. Wigdahl thus had his 18-inning scoreless streak snapped.
Salem lost for the fourth time this season to right-hander Derek Rodriguez. The righty went six innings and a third and allowed just one earned run. That came on Mark Ori's ninth homer of the season.
Even with the loss, Salem's magic number for a playoff spot fell to two as Myrtle Beach lost twice to Potomac. With a Myrtle loss and a Salem win Tuesday at 7:05 in Wilmington, the Avs would cement a playoff berth. In that game with the Blue Rocks, righty Sean Walker faces right-hander Dan Cortes.
