Pelicans Fall in Extra Innings to Fireflies

June 2, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Extra innings had to decide the first game between Myrtle Beach and Columbia as the Fireflies scored two runs in their half of the 11th to take the victory 5-3 on Tuesday night. The loss ends a season-high three-game winning streak for the Pelicans as they drop to 13-12, and the Fireflies take sole possession of first place in the Low-A East, South Division standings with a 16-9 record. The game was also a part of MiLB's Copa de la Diversion series as the Pelicans came out as "Pelicanos de Myrtle Beach" to embrace the U.S. Hispanic community.

After not getting their first hit until the fifth inning, the Birds totaled eight for the evening with Jacob Wetzel (1-4, HR) blasting his first home run of the season and Pablo Aliendo (2-5, 2B) posting his fifth multi-hit game in his last six performances.

The loss went to Bailey Reid (0-1) after he tossed the final two innings with two hits allowed and two unearned runs. Joe Nahas started his first game of the season and went three innings allowing five hits and two earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Maikel Garcia (3-5, 3B, 2 RBI) led a Fireflies lineup that collected 12 hits as a team. Darryl Collins (3-5, HR) hit a solo home run en route to a three-hit night for the Fireflies.

Emelio Marquez (2-0) earned the win after tossing the final three innings with just one hit allowed and no runs. He also struck out four while walking just one.

The Fireflies got on the board first with a two-run second inning, courtesy of a Herard Gonzalez RBI single and a Garcia single to go in front first. Columbia added one more run in their half of the fourth as Collins homered off Pelicans' reliever Jake Reindl to make it a 3-0 lead.

The Pelicans were held hitless until the fifth inning and scoreless until the seventh when Wetzel hit a line-drive home run to right field for his first of the season and it was a 3-1 game. The Birds tied it with two runs in their half of the eighth, with a Flemin Bautista RBI double and a Jordan Nwogu RBI single.

Both teams stayed silent in the ninth and 10th innings until Garcia singled to bring home two runs and give Columbia a 5-3 lead in the 11th frame. Marquez struck out the side in the Birds' half of the 11th to get the 5-3 win.

Myrtle Beach and Columbia will meet for game two of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
