Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Kinston Indians built a large lead in the middle innings and held on late to take game two from the Pelicans 8-5 in front of 3,936 fans. The Pelicans eclipsed the all-time franchise attendance record as a total of 234,713 fans have attended Pelicans games this season. The previous record was set back in 2000 when 234,020 fans turned out to support the Pelicans.
The K-Tribe took an early lead in the first inning. Carlos Santana hit a double towards the wall in left-center field. Then, Nick Weglarz drove him home with a single to the opposite field.
The Pelicans took the lead from Kinston in the second. Concepcion Rodriguez and Jon Mark Owings strung together consecutive hits. Carlton Smith then misplayed a bunt by Phillip Britton to load the bases. Gorkys Hernandez followed by drawing a walk to tie the score at 1-1. The Birds took the lead on a ground out by Travis Jones.
In the third, Kinston recaptured the lead as Carlos Santana belted a long home run to right field with Niuman Romero on base. Kinston went onto plate one run in each of the next three innings to build a 6-2 lead after six innings. Kinston then scored two more runs in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead. Cirilo Cumberbatch had the big hit in the seventh.
The Pelicans answered in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. Eric Campbell led off by blasting his 19th home run of the season into Land Shark Landing. Ernesto Mejia was then grazed by a pitch. After advancing to third on two wild pitches by Sung-Wei Tseng, he was drawn home on a sacrifice fly to center by Jason Heyward. The Pelicans then loaded the bases on three straight hits by Rodriguez, Owings and Britton. A slow rolling grounder towards short by Chad Lundahl brought home Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 8-5. The Pelicans would not get any closer.
Kinston starter Carlton Smith earned the win, while Pelicans starter Jaye Chapman was saddled with the loss.
The Pelicans play game three against the Kinston Indians on Sunday, August 31st at 6:05. The Pelicans will send LHP Cole Rohrbough (2-1, 3.51), while the Kinston Indians will counter with Jeanmar Gomez (4-9, 4.62).
