Pensacola Pelicans News Release

A strong pitching performance tonight by Pensacola Pelicans starter John Webb helped propel the Pelicans to a 5-3 win over the Shreveport Sports tonight in front of nearly 2,000 fans. Pensacola's offense would come up with some timely hitting and play solid defense in front of second largest Monday crowd in club history.

Pensacola jumped out to an early lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Sean Gamble led off with a four pitch walk. Ricardo Cordova single through the right side to advance Gamble to third. Rafael Alvarez then knocked Shreveport's Daniel Welch's 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a three run homerun.

The Sports would answer in the top of the third. Chris Frye singled for the Sports first hit of the game. Frye advanced to third on a Ricardo Cordova error which would have ended the inning. Deacon Burns singled up the middle to drive in Frye and get the Sports on the board.

The Pelicans added another run the bottom of the fourth inning off the bat of Billy Cox. Cox led off the inning with a solo homerun into the left field party deck for his first homerun of the season.

The Sports finally got things going off John Webb in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Ron Fenwick singled to left and Chris Smith walked to put runners on first and second. With runners moving on the pitch, Chris Smith singled up the middle to score Fenwick and make it a 4-2 ball game. That would be the end of the night for Webb. Pelicans would put in sidearm reliever Carl Scheafer in place of Webb. A wild pitch by Scheafer would score Smith to make it 4-3 before retiring Chris Frye to end the inning.

The Pelicans would tack on another insurance run in the bottom of the eight inning.

Dustin Cameron came in the ninth and picked up his fourth save of the season. John Webb improved to 2-1 on the season and snapped the Pelicans three-game losing streak.

Dane DeValk will take the mound tomorrow night for the Pelicans in game two of this four game series against the Shreveport Sports.
