Pelican Bats Fall Silent In Second Loss To Dash

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - After getting swept by the Salem Red Sox in their first series with the Southern Division, the last thing the Pelicans needed was to run into two of the better pitchers in the Carolina League in their return to BB&T Coastal Field, but that's just what happened. The Myrtle Beach bats have gone silent over the last two nights, falling for the second straight day to the Winston-Salem Dash by the score of 7-1.

A night after Justin Edwards allowed just a single run in seven innings on Monday night, righty Nate Jones nearly duplicated the feat on Tuesday, surrendering just a Calvin Culver sacrifice fly in 6 2/3 nearly spotless innings. At one point, the flamethrowing Jones (1-1) retired 14 Pelicans in a row from the second to the seventh innings.

Cole Rohrbough (0-1) improved upon his first two outings for the Pelicans on Tuesday night, tossing a season-high five innings with five strikeouts, but he allowed three runs, two on a long home run off the bat of second baseman Drew Garcia, who finished the night with three runs batted in.

There wasn't much offense for Myrtle Beach on this evening as the team mustered just three hits after knocking just four hits the night before.

Things became contentious in the fifth inning during Gerardo Avila's second at bat of the ballgame. With two strikes on Avila, he called for time before Jones delivered toward home plate, but home plate umpire Tyler Wilson did not grant Avila the reprieve. Avila had already stepped out of the box when Jones bent a breaking ball over the outside corner for a called third strike. Avila argued and was subsequently ejected.

Three Dash relievers finished off the Pelicans in the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out five and not allowing a base hit. The Pelicans will look to bounce back on Wednesday night in the third game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 ET and it will be Webkinz Wednesday at BB&T Coastal Field. The first 500 kids 12 and under through the games will receive a Tree Frog Webkinz courtesy of Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union.
