Pechurskiy's Goaltending Leads 'Kings Over Mudbugs

January 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS - Alexander Pechurskiy turned aside 19 shots, including a number of high-quality scoring chances to help the Mississippi RiverKings to a 3-1 win over Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The ‚¬ËœBugs have now lost four straight games and stand at 21-15-1 heading into Thursday night ‚¬â„¢s home game against the Dayton Gems.

Shawn Limpright scored the lone goal for Bossier-Shreveport, who hit numerous posts in the game and watched Pechurskiy shut down their best efforts for most of the night. The Mudbugs finish the season series with a 6-2-1 record against the RiverKings, who were propelled to Tuesday ‚¬â„¢s win by pair of third period goals.

Mississippi scored on the game ‚¬â„¢s first shot when Matt Summers got a nice feed from Russell Smith and beat John DeCaro from in tight just 63 seconds in. Despite being outshot 8-4, the ‚¬ËœBugs had the better scoring chances for the remainder of the period as David Rutherford, Travis Clayton and Shawn Limpright all had shots ring off the posts behind Alexander Pechurskiy. Bossier-Shreveport also missed on three powerplays in the first 20 minutes and trailed 1-0 after one.

The ‚¬ËœBugs outshot the RiverKings 12-6 in the second period and tied the game at one on the powerplay when Shawn Limpright drifted into the right circle and loaded up a slapshot that beat Pechurskiy just inside the post on the glove side at 5:31. Pechurskiy made a number of other tough saves throughout the period to hold the Mudbugs at bay and keep the game tied at one heading into the third.

A Mudbugs turnover at the Mississippi blueline led to the 3-on-1 rush that culminated in Jeff Christian ‚¬â„¢s goal at 9:17, putting the ‚¬ËœKings ahead for good at 2-1. Darrell Stoddard then extended the lead to 3-1 with a powerplay goal off a Louis Dumont pass with less than four minutes remaining. The ‚¬ËœBugs pulled DeCaro on a late powerplay, but couldn ‚¬â„¢t solve Pechurskiy again and finished 1-5 on their longest road trip of the season.

John DeCaro (10-6-1) finished the night with 20 saves, but lost his second straight attempt as his 100th career win. Alexander Pechurskiy improved to 10-7-0 after the 19-save victory. The Mudbugs converted one of six powerplay opportunities, while the RiverKings finished 1 for 4. Mississippi outshot Bossier-Shreveport 23-20 for the night.

The Mudbugs will now return home for the first time in three weeks for their first-ever meeting with the Dayton Gems Thursday night at 6:35 pm at the CenturyTel Center. We ‚¬â„¢re asking Mudbugs fans to help us "black out" the Gems Thursday on 98 Rocks "Back in Black Night" by wearing all black to the game.
