Dayton Gems Weekend Review

January 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release

The Dayton Gems made the holiday weekend a good one, winning two of the three games they played.

The Gems captured both wins on their home ice, defeating Bloomington 5-2 on Friday and Missouri 2-1 on Monday afternoon. The lone loss came on the road Saturday in Quad City where the Gems were defeated 3-2.

In Friday's action, one good period proved to be the only thing the Gems needed to capture the win. Dayton scored three goals in the second period en route to defeating the PrairieThunder. Mike Vaskivuo, Jonathan Ornelas and Kyle Bochek each score in the second period to give the Gems a lead that was never relinquished.

Vaskivuo and Corey Couturier each recorded insurance goals in the third period to give Dayton the 5-2 win.

Things were a little less stable on the road. The Gems scored in each of the first two periods, but it wasn't enough as Quad City defeated the Gems 3-2. Dayton is now 5-9-1 on the road.

The Gems were able to turn things around at Hara Arena on Monday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Missouri.

Vaskivuo and Matthew Larke recorded the only goals for Dayton, but it was enough for the Gems to capture the win. The two goals are the fewest goals the Gems have scored in a win since they defeated Fort Wayne 2-1 on Dec. 26.

Upcoming Weekend

The Dayton Gems will be a long way from home this weekend as they kick off a three-game road trip in Bossier-Shreveport, La. on Thursday. The Gems will take on the Mudbugs at 7:35 p.m.

After that, Dayton will head to Mississippi to take on the RiverKings on Friday and Saturday. Both games will start at 8 p.m.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
