WOODBRIDGE, Va- With time ticking down in the season's first half, the P-Nats' chances of repeating as Carolina League first-half champions are growing dimmer and dimmer as the Lynchburg Hillcats refuse to lose in their quest to qualify for an early postseason appearance in 2009. Beginning their final first-half homestand by welcoming in the Wilmington Blue Rocks, the P-Nats took down the Rocks behind a workmanlike performance from their staff ace and some timely knocks in a 5-3 victory from Pfitzner Stadium.

Brad Meyers, the Carolina League's leader in ERA coming into the ballgame at 1.66, had continued to lower that stellar ERA but kept coming away with nothing to show for his efforts. Though he had only allowed three earned runs in his last 19 1/3 innings, Meyers was 0-1 during that span as poor run support had doomed the lanky righty. The tables turned for Meyers in this one early in the contest, though he fell behind 1-0 after a Mike Moustakas RBI double in the top of the first.

The Nats would get those runs back and then some in the bottom of the second as Chris Marrero would cross the dish on a passed ball by catcher Ryan Eigsti to tie the score, and Francisco Plasencia would follow with a hard single to right field to plate Sean Rooney.

The Rocks would tie it in the third on a Johnny Giavotella sacrifice fly, but Meyers would buckle down and keep Wilmington off the board until the seventh inning. The lead exchanged hands a few times in this contest as the Nats would go ahead in the bottom of the third once again on an RBI single by Dan Nelson to give the Nats a 3-2 advantage.

Blue Rocks hurler Mario Santiago and Meyers would match each other pitch for pitch in the middle innings, putting up zeroes to keep both offenses in check. Wilmington would wash away the Potomac lead against Meyers in the seventh as Jamar Walton lined a single through a drawn-in infield to knot the game at three.

It would be an instant message sent by the P-Nats in the bottom half of the frame as they would put two runners on with nobody out against Santiago (3-6). Lefty Carlos Rivas would come in to pitch to Tim Pahuta, but Trent Jewett would counter with right-hander Brian Peacock. The move paid off handsomely as Peacock roped a 3-2 pitch deep into right-center field for a two-run triple, his third of the season which leads the time to make it 5-3 in favor of the P-Nats.

Meyers would last until two outs in the eighth inning, tying for the longest outing of his career. Meyers (4-2) struck out six without walking a batter in picking up his first victory since a May 7 start against this same Wilmington ballclub from Frawley Stadium.

Atahualpa Severino would pitch the final 1 1/3 scoreless frames to pick up his team-leading ninth save of the season.

With the Lynchburg loss in Myrtle Beach, the P-Nats remain alive in the race for first place in the Northern Division, five games behind the first-place Hillcats.
