Matusz Promoted to Double-A Bowie

Frederick, MD - The Baltimore Orioles have announced that Frederick Keys left-handed pitcher Brian Matusz has been promoted to Double-A Bowie. Matusz, who began his professional career with the Keys, went 4-2 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 starts with Frederick. He finished his Carolina League tenure with a 23-consecutive innings scoreless stretch that included three consecutive scoreless starts.

Matusz led the Carolina League in strikeouts (75) with 12 more than any other league pitcher. He was in the top-5 in the league in innings pitched (66.2) and earned run average (2.16). He struck out six or more batters in eight of his eleven starts. The Keys opening day starter was slated to pitch in the Carolina-California League All-Star Game on June 23rd in Lake Elsinore, CA.

The Orioles first round pick with the fourth overall pick of the 2008 draft, Matusz was the second highest drafted player to ever play with the Keys in the 21-year history of the franchise. Matusz pitched for three years at the University of San Diego leading all of Division I baseball in strikeouts his junior season.

Sean Gleason, who won 12 games with Class-A Delmarva in 2008, will return to the Keys. Gleason began the season in Frederick making one start before being promoted to Double-A Bowie. The right-handed pitcher went 3-5, with a 5.96 ERA in ten starts with the Baysox.
