Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Former Portland Beaver Justin Huber is one of six top Triple-A sluggers who will compete in the American Family Insurance All-Star Home Run Derby at PGE Park on Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m., it was announced today. Two Portland-area high school players who qualified through preliminaries earlier this season at PGE Park will join the Triple-A sluggers.
The All-Star Home Run Derby is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Cricket Wireless Triple-A All-Star Game, a matchup between the top players from the Pacific Coast League and International League at PGE Park on Wednesday, July 15, on ESPN2.
Brendan Katin of the Nashville Sounds anchors the PCL contingent, currently ranking third in the league with 19 homers. Joining him for the PCL will be Terry Evans of Salt Lake and John Bowker of Fresno, both of whom are tied for fourth with 17 homers.
Shelley Duncan of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees is the current home run leader in the International League with 21 home runs. Joining him for the IL will be Andy Tracy of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with 14 home runs and Huber, who has 11 home runs with the Rochester Red Wings this season. Huber batted .246 with three homers and 27 RBIs in 61 games with Portland during the 2008 season.
Hillsboro High School's Sid Jensen, who hit three home runs during his junior season, will represent the PCL after finishing first in the preliminaries at PGE Park. Kevin Taylor of Sunset High School finished second in the preliminaries and will represent the IL in the All-Star Home Run Derby. Taylor, who will turn 18 on the day of the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby, was the Oregon 6A Player of the Year this past season and clubbed 11 home runs.
The All-Star Home Run Derby will be hosted by Portland Beavers play-by-play broadcaster Rich Burk and Oregonian columnist and 95.5 The Game on-air host, John Canzano. In addition, fans will have the opportunity to win great prizes through various performance-related promotions that will match them up with the Home Run Derby contestants. The special event will also include a special "Cirque-style" in-event performance, featuring contortionists, hand-balancers, stilt-walkers and acrobats.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. to watch the Home Run Derby contestants take batting practice.
Tickets for the All-Star Home Run Derby presented by American Family Insurance start at just $9 and are currently available at the PGE Park box office in addition to area Ticketmaster outlets, including Fred Meyer locations.
