Norfolk Tides News Release

June 4, 2007 - The Pawtucket Red Sox held the Tides to one run in both games of a doubleheader, sweeping a twinbill from Norfolk Monday afternoon at Harbor Park.

In game one, David Murphy and Bobby Scales each had three hits and an RBI to lead the Pawsox to a 5-1 win.

Pawtucket pounded out nine hits off of Tides' starter Tim Kester (3-5), who allowed three runs - two earned - while walking one and striking out two in 5.0 innings of work.

Norfolk mustered only four hits off Pawtucket starter Jon Lester (1-1), who lowered his ERA to 1.26 with the win. Lester walked one and struck out one in his 6th start for the Pawsox this season.

The Tides plated their lone run of the contest on a long home run over the left-center field wall by Luis Montanez in the 6th inning.

In the second game of the twinbill, the Pawsox held off a late rally to knock off Norfolk 2-1.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th, Adam Stern led off the frame with a walk off of Red Sox closer Travis Hughes, and moved to second on a single by Alberto Castillo. Cesar Crespo sacrificed both runners up a base, and Tike Redman drove home Stern with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring the Tides within one. Hughes escaped the jam, however, by retiring Brandon Fahey on a comebacker to the mound during an 11-pitch at-bat, ending the Norfolk rally and giving the Pawsox the sweep and the series win.

The Pawsox used the long ball to take the lead in the second inning of the contest, courtesy of back-to-back home runs off the bats of Michael Tucker and Chad Spann.

After the two home runs in the second, Tides' starter Garrett Olson (3-6) was impressive, facing just two batters over the minimum the rest of the way. Olson allowed five hits while walking one and striking out four, earning Norfolk's second complete game of the season.

Norfolk dropped three of the four games in the set, plating six total runs in the series.

Norfolk takes to the road on Tuesday as they begin an eight-day road trip. Jim Johnson (1-5, 4.30) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Columbus right-hander Felix Diaz (4-4, 5.69), with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
