PawSox Streak Ends with 4-1 Loss

MOOSIC, PA - Pawtucket saw their five-game winning streak come to an end in a 4-1 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday night.
The PawSox sent knuckleballer Charlie Haeger, winner of the International League Pitcher of the Week award last week, to the hill against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in search of Pawtucket's 6th straight victory. After a scoreless 1st frame, the RailRiders scored a pair of runs in the 2nd. A single and a double put runners at second and third before JR Murphy singled to left to plate both runners and take a 2-0 lead.
Pawtucket had their first scoring chance in the 4th as Mark Hamilton doubled with one out, but the PawSox could not come up with a clutch hit. In the 6th, Jonathan Diaz and Brock Holt singled to start the frame, but Ryan Lavarnway bounced into a double play. After a walk put runners on the corners, Tony Thomas stuck out to end the inning.
The RailRiders would come back in the bottom of the 6th with a one out double by Adonis Garcia to start a rally. A pop up and a passed ball later, Corey Patterson singled to right to plate Garcia and give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-0 advantage.
Haeger would depart after six innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.
In the 7th, 'Riders starter Caleb Cotham allowed a one out double to Jeremy Hazelbaker before being removed in favor of reliever Dellin Betances. The tall righty struck out two and walked one to get of the inning stranding a pair. Cotham went 6.1 innings allowing no runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added another run in the 7th against reliever Brock Huntzinger. An errant throw on a potential double play allowed Derek Jeter to get to second base. A ground out moved him to third before Huntzinger's wild pitch allowed him score to make the score 4-0.
Major league rehabber Derek Jeter played seven innings going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Pawtucket would not be shutout Friday night as Justin Henry singled home a run with two outs in the 9th, but closer Jim Miller retired Jonathan Diaz to end the game snapping the PawSox five-game winning streak. It was the first loss for Pawtucket this season at PNC Field.
The PawSox will conclude their four-game set at PNC Field with the RailRiders Saturday night at 7:05pm. Pawtucket will send Clayton Mortensen (3-0, 2.95) to the hill against Chris Bootcheck (9-7, 3.84) of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Pawtucket will return home to McCoy Stadium for the final homestand of the regular season Sunday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse.
