Indians Roll over Red Wings 6-1

August 23, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Top prospect Jameson Taillon earned his first career Triple-A victory after allowing just one run on four hits over 6.0 innings, while designated hitter Andrew Lambo launched a eighth inning solo home run and drove in two to help lead the Indianapolis Indians (74-59) past the Rochester Red Wings (72-61) 6-1 on Thursday night at Frontier Field. With the win the Indians magic number to clinch their second straight International League West Division title drops to three.

Over his first three career Triple-A starts, top prospect Jameson Taillon tied for second most strikeouts in the International League with 22, however, his first career Triple-A victory continued to elude him. That was until Thursday night in Rochester where the 21-year-old showed great poise on the mound, working out jams on his way to earning the win.

Taillon (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) surrendered just a single score on four hits over 6.0 innings to improve to 1-1 on the season with the Indians and lower his ERA to 3.75. The hard-throwing right hander retired the first six batters before issuing a lead-off walk to LF Antoan Richardson in the bottom of the third.

The walk led to the only score allowed by Taillon on the night as Richardson stole second and moved to third to third on a throwing error on the caught stealing attempt by C Kelly Shoppach. Former Indians backstop Eric Fryer then lifted a sac fly to center to bring home Richardson for what proved to be the Red Wings only run of the contest.

Taillon did his part to keep the Red Wings off the board, working out of a jam caused by a double and two walks in the fourth as well as a one-out three-base error in the fifth. Following Taillon's departure Tribe relievers Erik Cordier, Atahualpa Severino and Duke Welker combined to allow just one hit over 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.

Cordier (0.2 IP, BB) allowed just a walk in 0.2 of a inning of work to earn his third hold, while Severino (0.2 IP) worked a perfect 0.2 of an inning to notch his fifth hold. Welker then provided the knock out punch, striking out three over the final 1.2 innings to give the Tribe the victory.

While Taillon and company held down the Rochester bats, the Indians offense came alive with six runs on 13 hits. Indianapolis got off to a quick start in the first inning as CF Alex Presley and SS Robert Andino rolled back-to-back singles to lead off the game.

The rehabbing Travis Snider then reached first on throwing error by starter Pat Dean to load the bases. Eventually, the RBI machine Andrew Lambo stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Presley to easily speed home.

On the play an errant throw to the plate got away from Rochester, allowing Andino to also come across and give the Indians an early 2-0 advantage. That lead was pushed to 3-0 when 1B Russ Canzler followed Lambo with a clutch two-out RBI single to left that brought home Snider.

Indianapolis then tacked on what proved to be three unneeded insurance scores late in the game with single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Snider brought home the first run with an RBI base knock in the seventh, while Hague singled home the final score with a two-out RBI single in the ninth.

However, the big blow came off the bat of Lambo, who smashed a massive home run to deep right field to lead-off the eighth inning. The home run was the first for Lambo since returning to the Indians from his Major League debut with Pittsburgh and his 18th with the Tribe this season.

Overall, between Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis this season, Lambo now ranks fourth in all of Minor League baseball with 32 home runs and sixth with 99 RBI.

Following the series opening victory the Indians will now continue their four-game set in Rochester on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brandon Cumpton (6-7, 3.55 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Tribe, while the Red Wings are scheduled to counter with Major League veteran Scott Diamond (2-0, 2.70 ERA)

The game will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
