Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, topped the Charlotte Knights, 8-1, on Friday. Syracuse scored seven runs over the final three innings. Eight Chiefs batters tallied at least one hit.

Charlotte was the first team to cross the plate and did so in the top of the second inning against Danny Rosenbaum. Michael Earley singled to start the frame. Jim Gallagher then moved Earley to second base with a single to left field. With Miguel Gonzalez at the plate, Rosenbaum threw a wild pitch that allowed both runners to advance a base. Gonzalez followed with a single to right field that scored Earley for a 1-0 Knights lead.

Syracuse answered in the bottom of the third inning against Charlotte starting pitcher Zach Stewart. Chris Rahl led off with a single to left field. Eury Perez then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Rahl to second base. The next batter, Jeff Kobernus, launched a double to the wall in left field that scored Rahl to tie the game.

The Chiefs took the lead in the sixth inning. Chris Marrero walked to begin the frame. Will Rhymes followed with a single to right field. Zach Walters then blasted a triple to right-center field that scored both runs. The next batter, Kris Watts, smacked a double to right-center field that scored Walters to make the score 4-1.

Syracuse blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh inning. Danny Espinosa and Corey Brown hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second base with nobody out. Marrero then walked to load the bases. The next batter, Rhymes, hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Espinosa to score. Walters followed with another sacrifice fly to center field that scored Brown for a 6-1 Chiefs lead. With two outs, Watts laced a double down the right-field line that scored Marrero from first base to make the score 7-1.

In the eighth inning, the Chiefs added another insurance run. With one out, Kobernus doubled to left field. After a strikeout, Brown hit a ground-ball single to right field that scored Kobernus for an 8-1 Syracuse lead.

The Charlotte lineup struggled against Syracuse's pitching. Rosenbaum went six innings of one-run ball and struck out four. Three Chiefs relievers then combined to finish a scoreless back three innings. That included Ian Krol, who struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning in his Triple-A debut.

Syracuse and Charlotte are back in action to play game three of this four-game set on Saturday at 7:00. The Chiefs send right-hander Yunesky Maya to the hill against right-hander Erik Johnson for the Knights.
