Indianapolis Indians News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Pawtucket plated three late runs to register a 3-2 victory over Indianapolis before a crowd of 10,384 Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. The contest served as the season opener for both clubs.
The winning run came in the bottom of the ninth when Pawtucket 2B Trent Durrington smashed a one-out triple to right field and later scored on a fielder's choice.
The exciting finish came after both teams clobbered a pair of solo home runs on the 40-degree night.
Indians LF Ray Sadler tagged roundtrippers in the third (left field) and fifth frames (left-center field), while PawSox 3B Rodney Nye went deep in the seventh (left field) and Jeff Bailey tied the contest in the eighth (left field).
Sadler finished the contest 2-for-3. Bailey and CF Willie Harris collected two hits apiece for Pawtucket.
The Indianapolis pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, while the PawSox staff collected 10.
Pawtucket LHP Mike Bumatay (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked a perfect ninth inning for the win. Indians RHP Jonah Bayliss (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) allowed the winning run and was pinned with the loss.
Tribe LHP Tom Gorzelanny (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 SO) ended up with a no-decision despite fanning seven of eighth Pawtucket hitters during a stretch from the first through third innings. He struck out the side in the second frame.
The two teams return to McCoy Stadium Friday night at 7:05 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. Indians RHP Brandon Duckworth is scheduled to face three-time Major League All-Star David Wells. The southpaw, who ranks fifth among active big league pitchers with 227 victories, is with Pawtucket on a rehab assignment.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Friday's pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
