Bulls too much for Tides
April 6, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk mustered just five hits off of four Durham pitchers, as the Tides fell to the Bulls 8-0 in front of 8,626 fans on Opening Night at Harbor Park.
Darnell McDonald paced the Bulls with three hits and three RBI, including a solo home run in the 5th inning off of Tides starter Jose Lima (0-1). Four other Durham starters had multiple hits, including Chesapeake native B.J. Upton, who went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Lima allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched, and struck out four without walking a batter. Lima also provided the Tides' highlight of the evening, as he sang a beautiful rendition of God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch as a tribute to the police and firefighters in attendance at Harbor Park.
Jason Hammel (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulls, allowing three hits in 5.0 shutout innings of work. The 23-year-old right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
Juan Tejeda led the Tides offense with two hits, while Jeff Keppinger and Chris Basak added doubles in the losing effort.
The Tides and Bulls meet again on Friday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:15 p.m. Right-hander Jeremi Gonzalez takes the hill for the Tides, while Edwin Jackson toes the rubber for Durham.
