Bisons Announce Opening Day Roster

April 6, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Buffalo Bisons today announced their Opening Day roster for the 2006 season. The Herd opens their 144-game schedule this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the Richmond Braves at The Diamond in Virginia.

Today's game is the first of an eight-game road trip that will feature games in Richmond and Norfolk. The Bisons Home Opener is Friday, April 14 against the Columbus Clippers at 6:05 p.m.

The Bisons open up the season with several familiar faces on their roster. Thirteen of the 23 players beginning the year with Buffalo spent time with the team in 2005. The list includes infielders Ryan Garko, Jake Gautreau and Joe Inglett, outfielders Jason Cooper, Jason Dubois, Franklin Gutierrez and Ben Francisco and pitchers Fausto Carmona, Jeremy Guthrie, Andrew Brown, Jeremy Sowers, Dan Denham and Jason Stanford. That group accounted for 458 hits, 271 runs, 57 home runs, 252RBI, 24 wins and 247 strikeouts thrown in 2005.

The Bisons catching duo of Einar Diaz and Tim Laker weren't with the Herd last season, but spent time earlier in their career with Buffalo. Diaz played 224 games with the Herd in 1997 and 1998, while Laker was with the Bisons for 148 games in 2000 and 2001.

Infielder Andy Marte, ranked as the #9 prospect in Minor League Baseball by Baseball America in 2005, headlines the list of players new to the organization in 2005. Lou Merloni and Jose Flores fill out the infield while Rob Bell, Nyang-Nam Choi, and Ben Howard join the Bisons pitching staff.

Pitchers Jake Dittler and Brian Slocum are now in Buffalo after spending last season at Double-A Akron.
