PawSox Rally, Back in Wild Card Lead

Pawtucket Red Sox News Release


The Pawtucket Red Sox rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning on Sunday afternoon and beat Charlotte 5-4. The victory, coupled with Lehighs' loss to Scranton, moves the PawSox back into the wild card lead by one half game with 8 games left on the schedule. Consecutive singles by Ivan DeJesus, Ryan Kalish, Tony Thomas and Danny Valencia produced three runs and a 5-3 lead. DeJesus went 2-3 with a walk in his Pawtucket debut. It was his first appearance since coming over in the trade with the Dodgers. Kalish had an RBI in the fourth and Thomas singled in a run in the sixth to account for the PawSox scoring.

Chris Hernandez pitched 6 solid innings, but didn't figure in the decision. Daniel Bard (3-2) earned the win despite allowing Charlotte to score the go-ahead run in the seventh. Jose de la Torre cruised through the eighth. In the ninth the Knights made it closer on a Josh Phegley double. For the second straight game, with two outs in the ninth, Josh Fields was summoned to get the final out. Greg Golson singled and Tony Thomas threw Phegley out at home plate from left field to end the game. Fields picked up his second straight save.

The PawSox head further south to Georgia for a four game series with the Braves. Game one is Monday night at 7:05 p.m.Nelson Figueroa (3-3) is slated to start for Pawtucket.
