Syracuse Mets News Release

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Pawtucket Red Sox topped the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, 9-5 Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse has dropped its first two games since the All-Star break. Pawtucket has now won three in a row against the Chiefs.

The PawSox wasted little time putting up runs against Chiefs pitching. Jed Lowrie, the second batter of the game, smacked a long homerun to right centerfield to begin the scoring. Pawtucket grabbed another run later in the inning on Lars Anderson's RBI double to rightfield.

The Chiefs scored their first run of the game in the first as well. With one out, Seth Bynum knocked the ball out of the park against Clay Buchholz for his seventh homer. That run cut Pawtucket's lead to 2-1.

Josh Reddick and Dusty Brown added solo homers in the second and third innings to increase the Pawtucket lead to 4-1.

Pawtucket's most productive inning came in the sixth. The Red Sox scored four runs and sent eight batters to the plate in the frame. With one out, Paw Sox centerfielder Ryan Kalish sent a two-run blast over the right field wall to make it 6-3. The two-run shot was Kalish's second homer of the year and Pawtucket's fourth of the night. A few batters later, Anderson whacked a triple past Kevin Mench in right, allowing two more Pawtucket runners to score.

Syracuse collected two runs in the eighth and had a chance for more until Jason Botts hit into an inning-ending double play. Leonard Davis and Jamie Burke started the rally with a pair of singles to open the frame. After Pedro Lopez walked, Boomer Whiting cracked a bases-loaded double to right, scoring Davis and Burke to make it 9-5. Bynum walked to load the bases again but Michael Bowden struck out Chase Lambin and induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Chiefs starter Jason Jones lost his second straight decision. He went 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs (four earned). He struck out two and walked a batter.

Fabio Castro improved his record to 4-6 with the win Friday night. He tossed two innings for the PawSox, surrendering one run on four hits. Major league rehabber Clay Buchholz pitched the first 3 2/3 innings for Pawtucket. He allowed four hits and two earned runs over 60 pitches. He struck out two and walked one.

Jed Lowrie led the Red Sox offense with three hits in four at bats, including his first Triple-A homer of 2010. He also stole a base.

Whiting and Burke each had three hits for the Chiefs. Bynum chipped in with a two-hit, three RBI performance.

The Chiefs and Red Sox will play the third game of their four game set Saturday night. The pitching matchup will be Syracuse's Shairon Martis (6-5, 3.75) against rehabbing big-leaguer Josh Beckett (0-0, 2.25). First pitch will be at 7:00.
