Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Rochester starter Alex Meyer pitched six strong innings and combined with reliever Ryan Pressly on a four-hitter as the Red Wings topped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 2-1, Thursday night in front of 10,492 fans at McCoy Stadium, to complete a sweep in the two-game series.
Meyer (5-4) and Pressly combined to hold the PawSox to only one hit after the second inning and to retire 19 of the final 21 Pawtucket batters in the game. The Red Wings (49-38) scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to scratch out a one-run win, their fifth-consecutive victory.
Meyer struck out seven and allowed only three hits in his six innings of work. The righty walked four and has allowed only one run to Pawtucket in 15.2 innings over three starts this season. Pressly allowed just one baserunner, a two-out single to Alex Hassan in the ninth, in three full innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
Pawtucket (45-44) finished its season-long ten-game homestand with losses in the final three games to go 6-4 over the ten days. Garin Cecchini's RBI single with nobody out in the second against Meyer put the PawSox in front 1-0, but Rochester's pitching dominated for the remainder of the night.
Chris Rahl's solo home run (5) against Pawtucket starter Allen Webster in the top of the fifth tied the score at 1. Webster allowed only two hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work. He was relieved by newcomer Miguel Celestino (0-1) in the sixth, who made his PawSox debut and took the loss.
Rochester's Pedro Florimon led off the seventh against Celestino with a double, then two batters later Dan Rohlfing grounded an 0-2 pitch down the left field line for the game-winning RBI double.
The PawSox next head on the road for ten straight beginning with a two-game series at Syracuse and then continuing on to Columbus and Toledo. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 7:00 pm first pitch, with PawSox right-hander Steven Wright (3-1, 2.43) starting against Chiefs lefty Aaron Laffey (10-3, 2.93). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:45 pm.
Following the ten-game road trip and the subsequent Triple-A All-Star break, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a four game series against Buffalo that begins on Thursday, July 17th.
