Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk, VA - Quintin Berry's bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Norfolk walk off with a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Knights in front of 8,136 fans Thursday night at Harbor Park.
With the score knotted at 3-3, Ivan De Jesus led off the ninth frame with a single off of Knights reliever Ryan Kussmaul (2-4). After a sacrifice bunt by Cord Phelps moved De Jesus to second, Kussmaul intentionally walked Steve Lombardozzi, and Julio Borbon followed with a sharp single to left that loaded the bases for Berry. Berry worked the count in his favor before taking a 3-1 pitch outside, forcing in De Jesus with the winning run and giving the Tides their second walk-off win over the Knights in as many nights.
With the win, the Tides moved a game ahead of the Knights for third place in the IL South division.
Making his Triple-A debut after a promotion from Double-A Bowie, Tides starter Tyler Wilson scattered eight hits and four walks over six innings of work but did not factor in the decision. Wilson surrendered at least one base runner in five of his six frames, but he repeatedly pitched out of damage as he stranded nine runners over his outing. The 24-year-old, who forced in the only run he allowed with a bases loaded walk in the sixth, struck out four while throwing 57 of his 87 pitches for strikes.
Wilson, who was 10-5 with a 3.72 ERA in 16 starts for the Baysox, picked up his 12th Quality Start of the season. That number is just one shy of the 13 Quality Starts posted by Norfolk's entire starting pitching staff this season.
The Tides jumped out to an early lead off of Charlotte starter Erik Johnson, as Lombardozzi opened the scoring with a second inning RBI single. Two batters later Berry lined a two-run single to left field to give Norfolk a 3-0 lead.
Norfolk led the contest 3-1 entering the eighth inning, but Charlotte plated two runs on consecutive two-out singles off of Preston Guilmet (4-1) by Carlos Sanchez and Josh Phegley to knot the score at 3-3. Guilmet responded by working a perfect ninth inning, setting the stage for Norfolk's walk-off win.
The two clubs will shift the home-and-home series to Charlotte on Friday, with first pitch from BB&T Ballpark set for 7:05 pm. Left-hander Chris Jones (4-5, 4.00) will make the start for Norfolk against right-hander Dylan Axelrod (5-6, 4.38).
