Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Buffalo, NY - Strong pitching and a timely hit carried the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) to a 4-1 series-finale win against the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) Thursday night. The win snapped a four-game slide for SWB which improved to 41-46, while Buffalo fell to 45-41. The RailRiders went 1-2 on their short two-day road trip.
The Bisons' lone run came in the first inning. Ryan Goins reached on a single and Kevin Pillar took his place on a fielder's choice. Starter Chris Leroux balked Pillar to second and Dan Johnson's bouncing ball to third baseman Scott Sizemore errantly hopped under his glove to score Pillar.
That unearned run was all Leroux allowed. He gave up one hit over six innings while whiffing four and walking three. He retired 16 of the last 18 he faced.
His team tied it up in the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Adonis Garcia reached on a strikeout and wild pitch by Esmil Rogers that plated Jose Pirela from third.
Sizemore more than made amends for his miscue in the eighth. Against All-Star closer Bobby Korecky, with two on and two out, he connected on a first-pitch swing for a double over shortstop that scored two. Those runs went on the line of former RailRider Mike Zagurski (3-1) who took the loss. Zoilo Almonte worked a bases-loaded walk from veteran right-hander Luis Ayala in the ninth to round out the scoring.
SWB relievers Francisco Rondon (3-0) and Diego Moreno (2) combined on three scoreless innings down the stretch for the win and save respectively.
The RailRiders return open to open a nine-game, eight-day homestand. It starts with a 7:05 p.m. Friday affair against Buffalo. Joel De La Cruz (2-5, 3.96) gets the ball for SWB against fellow right-hander Liam Hendriks (6-1, 2.13). John Sadak and Aaron Berlin will have the call on MyNetworkTV at 7 p.m. Jim Riley fills in on radio with the pregame show beginning at 6:35 p.m. on NEPA Sports Radio - The GAME, Northeast PA's largest sports radio network: 100.7 FM, 1340 WYCK-AM, 1400 WICK-AM, 1440 WCDL-AM and 106.7 FM.
