Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Dusty Brown hadn't put the ball in play as he stepped up to the plate in the eleventh inning. The Pawtucket Red Sox' catcher struck out in his first four plate appearances, but all was forgotten at McCoy Stadium Thursday night after his game-winning single in the eleventh inning.
Brushing aside the demons of his previous four strikeouts, Brown singled with the bases loaded and a full count. The base hit scored Lars Anderson from third base and sent the 6,240 PawSox fans in attendance home happy with a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Clippers.
Starting pitcher Randor Bierd was on a limited pitch count and threw just 63 pitches over five innings, striking out three Clippers. T.J. Large, Fernando Cabrera and Robert Manuel each pitched two innings out of the bullpen. The trio combined for eight strikeouts and allowed two hits in a combined six innings of work. Manuel pushed his overall record to 4-1 after earning the win, and his ERA is now 0.98 on the season.
PawSox pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout and extended their scoreless inning streak to 23 consecutive innings.
The four-game series continues Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Pawtucket's Ramon Ramirez (1-1, 5.67 ERA) facing off against John Timlin (5-2, 2.95 ERA) for Columbus.
