G-Braves Sweep Doubleheader vs. Syracuse

June 17, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves swept tonight's doubleheader with the Syracuse Chiefs on Thursday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett (31-35) won Game 1 (a suspended game from Syracuse on 5/8) by a score of 6-3, and then took Game 2 (7 innings) in a 3-0 shutout. It was the first time Gwinnett had beaten Syracuse (38-29) this season. This is the first doubleheader sweep for the Triple-A Braves since 7/25/07, when they defeated the Ottawa Lynx twice in one day. The G-Braves now stand in second place, 8.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham. The Chiefs are tied with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for first in the IL North.

Game 1

It Was Over When: G-Braves slugger Mitch Jones put the game that's been suspended for more than a month away with his two run bomb in the 7th inning way over his home away from home - the left field retaining wall.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: G-Braves RHP Tim Gustafson, who also originally started the game in Syracuse on 5/8, picked up right where he left off in earning the win. Gustafson finished with 6.0 IP while allowing 3 R/ER with 6 walks and a career-high 8 strikeouts. Michael Dunn pitched 1.0 inning of hitless relief to close out his 5th save.

At the plate: Jones finished 3-for-4 with 3 R, 3 RBI and one towering home run - his 11th. Barbaro Canizares finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, technically extending his longest hitting streak of the season from 10 games to 11 (4/29-5/12).

The opposition:

On the Mound: J.D. Martin, the starter of the initial game on 5/8, got a hard luck loss in the truest sense of the word. He was charged with the defeat (4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 K) despite currently playing for the Washington Nationals. Relievers Josh Wilkie, Collin Balester, Victor Garate and Pedro Lopez (a shortstop) all pitched in relief for the Chiefs.

At the plate: Third baseman Leonard Davis went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, while 2B Chase Lambin was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Game 2

It Was Over When: LHP Jo-Jo Reyes (1-4) found his groove again.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Reyes, who put in his longest start of the season at 6.0 IP, also set a career high as a G-Brave with 8 K's. He allowed just 3 hits in the shutout performance. RHP Stephen Marek came on in relief to earn his 3rd save in a scoreless inning pitched.

At the plate: SS Diory Hernandez (1-for-2), on an MLB rehab assignment from Atlanta, notched an RBI in his 2010 debut for Gwinnett. First baseman Freddie Freeman (1-for-3) knocked a solo HR to put the game out of reach, while 3B Wes Timmons also pushed in an RBI as he extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games.

The opposition:

On the Mound: RHP Shairon Martis (4-5) took the loss, going the full 6.0 IP while yielding 6 hits and 3 R/ER.

At the plate: Singles from Jason Botts, Devin Ivany, Justin Maxwell and Boomer Whiting were all the offense SYR could muster.

On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Syracuse again tomorrow night at Coolray Field for the second doubleheader in as many days, beginning at 6:05 p.m. The Chiefs will throw RHP Craig Stammen (0-0, 5.68 ERA) in Game 1 before sending RHP Erik Arnesen (1-2, 4.79 ERA) to the bump in Game 2. The G-Braves have not announced their starters.
