Syracuse Mets News Release
Lawrenceville, GA - In an abbreviated doubleheader on Thursday night the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost by scores of 6-3 and 3-0 to the Gwinnett Braves. The first game of the night was the completion of a game which was suspended due to rain on May 8th at Alliance Bank Stadium.
In game one, the action picked up in the top of the fifth inning with Gwinnett (31-35) at the plate. The Braves were leading 4-2 at the time. As the game resumed, the Chiefs would score first to pull the score to within one. Leonard Davis hit his tenth home run of the season in the sixth inning to make it 4-3 in favor of Gwinnett.
The Braves would answer in the seventh on a two-run home run from Mitch Jones given up by Chiefs reliever Collin Balester. That moved the score to 6-3 with the Chiefs trailing, and that would be the final.
Tim Gustafson earned the win for Gwinnett and J.D. Martin, now with the Washington Nationals, took the loss.
In the second game, which got underway at 8:11, the Chiefs would have trouble at the plate. In the first inning, Syracuse (38-29) got two runners aboard but could not get any runs across. The same happened in the fourth as Kevin Mench and Jason Botts both reached to start the inning, but Gwinnett starter Jo-Jo Reyes struck out the side with those runners on.
The Braves scored two of their three runs in the third inning off of Chiefs starter Shairon Martis. Jordan Schaeffer and JC Boscan singled back-to-back to lead off the inning, and advanced to second and third, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt by Reyes. Wes Timmons knocked in the first run to score Schaeffer on a sacrifice fly, and Diory Hernandez singled to score Boscan. After three, the Braves led 2-0.
The home team would score their third and final run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Barbaro Canizares. It was his fourth home run of the season.
Jo-Jo Reyes earned the win for the Braves pitching six innings and striking out eight. Despite pitching a complete game, Martis took the loss throwing six innings and striking out four. Stephen Marek recorded his third save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
On Friday, the Chiefs and Braves will play two seven-inning games in another doubleheader. The first game will start at 6:05 and Craig Stammen (0-0, 5.68) will start for Syracuse. In the second game, which will start approximately thirty minutes following the conclusion of the first, Erik Arnesen (1-2, 4.79) will take the mound for the Chiefs.
