New Jersey Jackals News Release
Worcester, Mass. - Isaac Pavlik turned in his league-leading fifth complete game of the season, but Worcester Tornadoes' starter Shawn Gilblair allowed just one unearned run in 7 2/3 innings of work as the New Jersey Jackals dropped a 2-1 decision on Wednesday night at Hanover Insurance Park.
Pavlik (9-2) fell short in his quest to become the Can-Am League's first 10-game winner, tossing eight innings and yielding just two runs on five hits. Gilblair (3-4) tied a career high with eight strikeouts as he surrendered three hits to pick up the victory.
The Tornadoes opened up the scoring in the top of the second when catcher Alex Trezza deposited a leadoff double just inside the chalk down the left field line and scored two batters later when center fielder Cam Monger hit a grounder to short that struck a divot and shot over shortstop Mike DeJesus' head to give Monger an RBI double.
Monger extended the Worcester lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning with an RBI single to center, plating designated hitter Mark Minicozzi, who reached on a leadoff walk.
The Jackals finally broke through against Gilblair in the top of the eighth. With one out, second baseman Argenis Reyes stroked a double to left center, advanced to third on a passed ball by Trezza, and scored on a DeJesus sacrifice fly to cut the New Jersey deficit to 2-1.
In the top of the ninth, third baseman Nick Giarraputo led off with a double for New Jersey and advanced to third on a ground out, but Worcester closer Rick Asadoorian struck out Kris Sanchez to strand the tying run at third base and nail down his 10th save of the season.
In his first game in the cleanup spot this season, Giarraputo collected two of New Jersey's four hits while Monger finished 3-for-3 and knocked in both Worcester runs.
The Jackals and Tornadoes conclude their four-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Shaun Ellis (5-1, 4.46 ERA), the reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, to the mound against Worcester southpaw Ryan Lobban (1-0, 6.75 ERA), who was a member of the Jackals' rotation last season. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
Jackal Bites: The loss knocks New Jersey out of a first-place tie with Brockton in the second half standings... New Jersey is now 4-5 against the Tornadoes this season and 49-50 against Worcester all-time... Pavlik's only other loss was also a 2-1 decision in which he tossed eight innings on the road at Rockland.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2011 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
