Pats Battle Back But Fall to Rebels 6-5 in OT

Red Deer, Alta. - The Regina Pats overcame two deficits of two goals. gathering a well-earned point in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Red Deer Rebels at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Tuesday.

The Pats trailed 2-0 early in the first and 3-2 after one before grabbing a 5-4 lead after two periods of play. Tanner Howe recorded a career-high four assists, Connor Bedard added three points (1G-2A) while Broya Valis scored twice and Alexander Suzdalev (1G-1A) chipped in with a multi-point game. Sam Oremba also scored for the Pats in the loss. Kelton Pyne made his first start since January 6, making 26 saves.

The Pats are now 1-1-1 against the Rebels in the season series, gathering three of a possible six points against Red Deer.

Red Deer's Ben King tied the contest with his second of the game early in the third period and Jhett Larson scored the overtime winner. Frantisek Formanek (2A), Jayden Grubbe (1G-1A) Kai Uchacz (1G-1A) and Hunter Mayo (2A) each had multi-point games while Craig Armstrong also scored. Rhett Stoesser made 17 saves on 22 shots in the win.

THE GOALS

First Period

RD 0-1 at 1:10 - Ben King (8), assisted by Kai Uchacz and Frantisek Formanek // The Rebels striked quickly as they notched the opener on their first shot of the game as Uchacz sent a pass to the slot to King who tapped it past Pyne to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead early.

RD 0-2 at 2:50 - Kai Uchacz (39), unassisted (PP) // With the Rebels on the powerplay, Brown's clearing attempt from beside the Pats net went off Uchacz and past a startled Pyne to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

REG 1-2 at 5:12 - Borya Valis (16), assisted by Tanner Howe and Alexander Suzdalev (PP) // While on a powerplay, the Pats worked it deep to Howe who sent a pass to the front of the net to Valis who fanned on a one-timer but the puck somehow deflected past Stoesser to get the Pats on the board now down by one at 2-1.

RD 1-3 at 8:10 - Craig Armstrong (6), assisted by Jayden Grubbe // A turnover led to another Rebels' marker as Grubbe's shot was kicked out by Pyne, right to Armstrong who buried it.

REG 2-3 at 13:39 - Connor Bedard (43), assisted by Tanner Howe // A Rebels defender lost control of the puck just inside the Pats line and Howe picked it up and found Bedard streaking past the Rebels players where he eventually got clear and in on a breakaway. As he was being slashed, Bedard made a fancy deke backhand to forehand and tucked the puck under Stoesser to get the Pats back to within one at 3-2.

Second Period

REG 3-3 at 1:27 - Alexander Suzdalev (25), assisted by Connor Bedard and Tanner Howe (PP) // The Pats worked it around on the powerplay to the left boards to Bedard who feathered a pretty pass through the slot to Suzdalev who fired home a one-timer to tie the contest at 3-3 early in the second frame.

RD 3-4 at 3:06 - Jayden Grubbe (14), assisted by Hunter Mayo and Mats Lindgren // Mayo's point shot hit a Pats defender's shin pad and right to Grubbe who fired the puck past Pyne to restore the Rebels' one-goal lead at 4-3.

REG 4-4 at 3:26 - Sam Oremba (5), assisted by Braxton Whitehead // Just 20 seconds after the Rebels re-took the lead, Oremba grabbed the puck along the left boards muscled his way towards the front of the Rebels net and Oremba's backhand shot beat Stoesser to tie the game up at 4-4.

REG 5-4 at 8:50 - Borya Valis (17), assisted by Connor Bedard and Tanner Howe // Just as a Pats powerplay expired, Bedard's one-timer from the side of the net was stopped by Stoesser, but the rebound bounced into the slot to Valis who slid the puck past the Rebels netminder to give the Pats their first lead of the game at 5-4.

Third Period

RD 5-5 at 6:50 - Ben King (9), assisted by Frantisek Formanek and Ollie Josephson // The Rebels broke into the Pats zone and the puck ended up on King's stick to the right of Pyne. He fired the puck over the Pats goalie and off the back crossbar and out to tie the game up at 5-5.

Overtime

RD 5-6 at 2:16 - Jhett Larson (12), assisted by Hunter Mayo and Jace Isley // Mayo's shot bounced off the Pats defender's leg and Larson was able to find it and tuck it past Pyne to win the game for the Rebels.

NOTES

Connor Bedard extended his point streak to 34 games with three points (1G-2A). He has 66 points in his last 23 games. He leads the WHL in goals (43), assists (45), points (88), and shots on goal (231). He has 16 goals, eight assists, and 24 points in seven games since coming back from the World Juniors. He's also scored 21 times during his career-high 10-game goal-scoring streak.

Stanislav Svozil's five-game point streak came to an end, but still has 11 points (11A) in his six games since returning from the World Juniors.

Alexander Suzdalev had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to seven games (4G-8A-12PTS).

Borya Valis scored twice to extend his point streak to three games (2G-2A).

Tanner Howe notched a career-high four assists in the game, which is also his ninth multi-assist game of the season.

Sam Oremba ended an eight-game goalless drought.

The Pats are now 9-5-2-1 against the Central Division this season.

UP NEXT

The Pats continue their busy week, tomorrow (Wednesday, February 1st) in Calgary, where they will battle with the Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome, also an 8:00 pm faceoff. The Queen City Kids have a day off, then blow into Lethbridge to play the Hurricanes on Friday, February 3rd at 8:00 pm at the Enmax Centre. They conclude their four-game trip with a stop in Medicine Hat to play the Tigers on Sunday, February 5th with a 5:00 pm face-off at Co-Op Place. All games are in Saskatchewan time.
