Shooting for Seven

Since returning from their two-week trip through the East Division in January, the Winterhawks have been on an absolute tear with six straight wins, including a three-in-three sweep of Swift Current, Seattle and Spokane last weekend. Of course, five of those games have been on home ice, but Saturday's win in Kent provides a blueprint for the Hawks to follow against tough competition tonight.

The All-American line of Chaz Lucius, Jack O'Brien and James Stefan was the story of last week's action, with the trio (plus defenseman Luca Cagnoni) leading all WHL skaters in scoring from Jan. 23-29. Meanwhile, Gabe Klassen and Robbie Fromm-Delorme continue to pace the Hawks in scoring with 27 goals apiece, showing off the team's depth. Look for another balanced effort in tonight's contest.

On the Road Again

It's February, and the Winterhawks are kicking off this month the same way they did the last one - on the road in Canada. They'll get used to the highway this month, with nine total road games in February to just three on home ice. After this week's contests in Kamloops and the Tri-Cities, the Hawks will head back to Kennewick next Friday, then embark on a long trip the following week with games in Spokane, Kelowna, Prince George and Seattle across a two-week span to end the month.

Nine road tilts in a month is a grind but also presents an opportunity for growth - a team often comes closer together during stretches like these, and with playoff action just around the corner, team chemistry is paramount.

Title Fight

If you're into playoff previews, tonight is the night for you with two division leaders going at it. The Winterhawks, sitting neck-and-neck with the Seattle Thunderbirds atop the U.S. Division, hold an 11-point lead over the Blazers in the Western Conference race, but Kamloops has only just begun life with its new trade acquisitions and seems poised to make a charge toward the end of the season.

The 2023 Memorial Cup hosts added a handful of pieces to their lineup since the Hawks last saw them, but no transaction was more eye-popping than the 10 draft picks and four players they sent to Everett for 2022 WHL Defenseman of the Year Olen Zellweger and Washington Capitals prospect Ryan Hofer. Those two provide an added punch to an impressive lineup featuring standouts like Logan Stankoven, Matthew Seminoff and Caedan Bankier. Still, Portland has gone 3-0-0 against Kamloops this season and boasts impressive depth in its own right, setting the stage for quite the showdown this evening.
