July 25, 2012 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers looked to rebound from the second game loss in the double header against Mystic last night, but fell just short of the New Bedford Bay Sox in what turned out to be a wild game, 10-8.

The Bay Sox got it started in the top of the third inning when they tacked up three runs on Mainers starter, Nate Jones. Zack Graczyk lead off the inning with a walk, he then stole second and then came around to score on an RBI double by Alex Baldock. After one out was recorded, Peyton Hart lined a single to center scoring Baldock. With the score at 2-0, Carl Anderson grounded out, but the Bay Sox offense continued. During the next batter, Hart came around to score on an RBI single by Brendan O'Brien.

The Mainers finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when Ino Patron hit a one out double to right and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Hagel - after Patron stole third.

New Bedford extended their lead to 5-1 with a run in the top of the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Alex Black hit a one out double to right field and then came around to score on a two out single to center off the bat of Baldock. In the sixth inning, Anderson singled to center and then stole second. On the very next play, O'Brien flew out to center on a diving play by Hagel, and due to the ball being hit so deep, Anderson was able to tag up from second base and come all the way around to score.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Mainers plated another run to make the score 5-2. Paul Kronenfeld walked with one out and put it into over drive to score from first on a double to right-center field off the bat of Gavin Stark.

The later innings is where the game got interesting. The Bay Sox plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The first six Bay Sox hitters reached base on a combination of two walks, three hits, and one error. RBI singles were issued to Andy Lalli when he lined to left scoring Black and Graczyk, another to Anderson in which he pushed across Baldock and Lalli.

The game seemed out of reach at 9-2, but the Mainers had an answer. In the bottom half of the seventh, the Mainers scored three runs of their own. Cam Young lead off the inning with a single and advanced to third when Cooper reached on an error, but advanced to second on the bad throw from Hart at short. Patron got on base for the fourth time in the night on another error by the second baseman, allowing Young to score and Cooper to advance to third. Patron moved up to second on a wild pitch and with two runners in scoring position, Jordan Betts came up to bat and grounded out to short, allowing Cooper to come in. Kronenfeld then hit a triple that one hopped off the wall in center field, allowing Patron to cross the dish for the Mainers third run of the inning.

Entering into the bottom of the eighth after the Bay Sox grabbed another run, the score was 10-5. The Mainers went to bat again scoring three more runs. Stark started the inning with a double to left center field just over the head of Anderson. He then advanced to third on a ground out by Brett Armour. Cam Young collected his third hit on the day, as well as recording an RBI when he singled just past the reach of Hart at short. Cooper singled down the third baseline, but Young was able to advance to third on a throwing error by Baldock.

With two men on and only one out, Patron got his fourth hit of the night, singling to center field scoring Young and pushing Cooper up two bases. Hagel then hit an infield single that loaded the bases. Kronenfeld forced a walk that scored another run and reduced the Bay Sox lead from what was once seven, to only two as the score went to 10-8.

As the momentum quickly changed from one side of the field to the other, the Mainers went to bat in the bottom of the ninth with one more chance to jump ahead of the Bay Sox, and this time for the win. However, Sam Dodge who came in to pitch in the eighth inning for relief, recorded the save by striking out the side.

The Mainers and the Bay Sox wrap up their season series. In eight games, the Mainers came out on top 5-3, going 3-1 in New Bedford and 2-2 at Goodall Park. The Moose will be on the road tomorrow night to face the Danbury Westerners for the second and last time of the season, in hopes to break their two game losing streak.

Rohn Pierce is set to make the start for the Mainers with game time starting at 6:30p.m.

Notes: Ino Patron reached base in all five plate appearances, collecting four hits on the night& Patron stole a base in each of his first three hits& Cam Young collected three hits& Young and Patron combined for seven of the team s twelve hits& 616 were on hand to watch the Mainers and Bay Sox...
