Mountaineers Drop Second Straight, 7-3

Montpelier, Vt. - For the second straight night, two homeruns weren't enough for Vermont as they fell to North Adams, 7-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Wednesday night. The loss was the second in a row for the Mountaineers (17-18) who dropped below .500 on the year.

Vermont started off strong as pitcher Casey Delgado (Miami, Fla./Austin Peay) faced a minimum six batters through the first two innings, while his offense spotted him a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Logan Pierce hit a solo shot to open the scoring and was followed by a Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J./Louisville) homer in the second.

Delgado even set down the first two batters in the third on two pitches before North Adams' (20-17) offense went to work. Conor Biggio worked a two out walk before consecutive singles from Jeff Roy and Shane Klemcke cut the Mountaineer lead in half. After an intentional walk to Charlie Law loaded the bases, Esteban Tresgallo hit a two out, two RBI single to put the SteepleCats ahead 3-2 in the top of the third.

They would add to their new found league in the fourth when North Adams loaded the bases with only one out. A wild pitch would bring home one run for the 'Cats prior to a Roy RBI single and a passed ball made the score 6-3 North Adams after four. Their starter, Chris Bielak, would settle in nicely after the first two innings tossing scorelss third and fourth innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mountaineers tried to get back into the game as Pierce (Troy, Ala./Troy) picked up his second RBI of the night with a two out double, but that would be all they could muster. The SteepleCats bullpen was dominant in relief as they pitched four shutout innings with Matt Longfield allowing a one out single in the ninth.

North Adams would tack another run on in the top of the eighth after Sheehan Planas-Arteaga worked a lead off walk from Steve Ostapeck (Sacremento, Calif./Villanova) before scoring on a throwing error from Casey Brighton (Hyde Park, Vt./SUNY-Plattsburgh). Reliever Kyle Grana (St. Louis, Mo./Bellarmine) would enter the game with one out in the eighth and make the final five outs in the game without allowing a run.

Delgado (2-3) took the loss giving up six runs, five earned, on eight hits while striking out five in three and a third innings while Bielak (3-0) got the win allowing three runs on six hits in five frames.
