Somerset Patriots News Release

Lancaster, PA- Josh Miller threw 7.0 innings of one-run baseball while the Patriots used a five-run 3rd inning to take the lead without looking back as Somerset took the opener of a three-game series over the Lancaster 9-2 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday night.

Somerset, along with a York Revolution loss, forced a three-way tie at the top of the Freedom Division for first place. With York losing, the Patriots, Revolution, and Barnstormers are tied for first place. It is the first share of first place the Patriots have had since June 13.

Miller (10-8) gave up a leadoff triple in the 1st to Lloyd Turner who was brought home on the next batter by Adam Witter. From there, Miller allowed just four base hits with one walk while inducing a double play, striking out four. Miller the sixth pitcher in the league to reach double-digit wins was outstanding the rest of the way, pitching at least 7.0 innings for the 12th time in 24 starts.

Meanwhile, Somerset's offense put up 13 hits against its division rival whom the Patriots trailed by one game going into Friday's game en route to nine runs. Matt Hagen, Noah Hall, and Iggy Suarez drove in runs in the 3rd to bring home five, taking the lead for the rest of the night against Jose Sanchez. After Elliott Ayala hit a two-run homer off of Sanchez (4-11) pushing him out, Austin Hinkle allowed a solo shot to Joe Burke to give Somerset a 7-1 lead in the 6th. Sanchez went 5.0-plus, allowing nine hits and seven runs, walking five. Hall scored in the 9th for a seven-run lead while Aaron Herr hit a solo homer off Jeff Kennard in the 9th for the final tally. But Somerset had plenty of cushion for its eighth win in 10 games.

Somerset (20-22, 56-56) and Lancaster (19-21, 50-60) play game two of a three-game series on Saturday night. Jason Monti (2-6, 4.21) and Ben Fritz (3-6, 3.51) square off as coverage begins at 6:25 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com.

NOTES: Jerry Dunn threw a scoreless eighth...Jeff Nettles went 1-5, still stuck at 499 career Somerset RBIs...Hall and Burke each had three hits with an RBI...Miller has notched 10 wins in each of his first two Somerset seasons...the Patriots assured themselves at least a .500 season against Lancaster, now 10-8 against the Barnstormers with two games remaining.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, August 27th when the Patriots return home to take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

The first 1,500 women in attendance will receive a Sling Bag courtesy of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.
