Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 21, 2010) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 3-0 on Saturday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,063 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

Long Island rallied with two outs in the second inning to take the early lead against Bears' starter Derek Blacksher. Matt Padgett doubled and came around to score on Matt Cavagnaro's RBI single to left. Robinson Cancel extended the lead to 2-0 in the following inning when he blasted a solo homer over the scoreboard in left-center field.

The score remained the same until the eighth when the Ducks tacked on an insurance run. Matt Esquivel's RBI single plated Javier Colina, giving the Flock a 3-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for Ducks' starter Daryl Harang (3-2), who fired seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out four. Blacksher (1-3) took the loss, yielding two runs on six hits in five innings of work. Ricardo Gomez fired a scoreless ninth inning for his ninth save.

Padgett paced the Ducks offensively with three hits, while Cavagnaro and Ray Navarrete added two apiece.

The Ducks and Bears wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. Game time is set for 5:05 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 4:05.
